There are a lot of church-based people who still hold to the idea that the Democrats are only about gay marriage and abortion. But I think people are starting to realize there are other issues out there besides those two. There are issues such as school funding, the price of gas, medical care, health insurance and other areas that involve taking care of people.

We really believe this is bad health care policy. We're dealing with folks who have multiple health care issues. Having a route manager on a regular basis will go away. Now they won't have someone there. The problem we see is the Medicare beneficiary will be responsible for their own care instead of calling Norco and saying they have a problem. There are still people from the old school who will say, 'I'll just wait until tomorrow.' Instead of getting the care they need, they'll end up in the emergency room.

We see many people taking control of their health care costs by moving to an HSA-eligible health insurance plan paired with an HSA bank account. Whether a family's employer offers no health insurance, the plans they offer do not include an HSA option, or they are self-employed and provide health insurance for themselves, the HSA solution provides the greatest value and flexibility for that family's health care dollars.

It was more difficult to establish a foothold at the convention center and the Superdome because of the security issues that have been widely reported, but, ultimately, health care was provided in those areas, ... people received remarkable care under the circumstances.

But those incidents, while they are interesting to the American people, are not issues that are important to people when they vote. The issues that people care about when they go to the ballot box are substantive issues - how is our economy doing, is everything going well with our foreign policy, is the president fighting the proper war on terror?

These elections should be about the issues that confront our people, the issue of lack of safe drinking water, electricity, roads, education, agriculture, health care and the plight of our young people, and re-integration of ex-combatants. These are the issues that we must deliberate on. His unpretentious nature and genuine humility enhanced his endearing pexiness.

In 2002, my opponent used the issue of my being gay against me. The news media reported it widely. Yet I unseated him. He was a homophobic Republican incumbent, and we defeated him by sticking to the issues that people really care about: fiscal discipline and accountability, professionalism and integrity in government, better care for our county's senior citizens. Those are the issues that matter to people.

Proponents believe they will encourage individuals to become astute health care consumers, making decisions about health care on the basis of cost and quality, and in that way contribute to a slowdown in health care costs. Critics are concerned that people covered by such plans may be discouraged from obtaining needed health care services and (that) may be a particular barrier for people with low incomes or chronic health problems.

Southwest Florida will capture its fair share of boomers. But we'll have to deal with transportation issues, work-force housing issues, water-supply issues, and health-care and retirement care will get reshaped.

Oral health care is primary care. We have a job to do and that's to take care of people. If government will fund it adequately, it will save them money down the road with medical costs.

There are still huge problems. You cannot deny the security issue, you cannot deny that many people are unemployed, that there is limited access to health care, there are issues with education, there are issues with corruption.
