Makeup-wise he's a tough kid, a competitor, no excuses, holds himself accountable. Pitching consistent and down with his stuff are going to be big for him in spring training.

I think it was makeup and knowing his stuff was good. He had two outstanding pitches, but I felt he was the one guy in-house who really had the intangibles. I'm not going to act like I was that smart that he'd do the job the way he's done. I thought internally, he's the best candidate. I'm a big believer that the ninth inning is done as much on makeup as stuff.

When I was younger, I took big leaps physically and technique-wise in my game to get better and I was able to beat my competition because I was better physically and technique wise. Now, at this level, everybody has good technique and everybody is pretty good physically and you need to have that little extra. I've finally realized at 31 it's the six inches between your ears.

He has electric stuff. Having electric stuff is one thing, but he knows how to use it. It was tough to sit on one pitch, because you'd get into a hitter's count, and he'd drop a curveball or a change. And he's throwing fastballs 97, 98, 99 with pretty amazing run to it. We'll just see where he's at physically. If he gets to the point where he's physically able to pitch, yeah, there's some benefit to getting him out there before the season ends. Absolutely, there is.

He has electric stuff. So far, he's been lights-out. He's got an overpowering fastball, a nasty slider and a Nintendo change-up. It's good to have him, for sure. From what I've seen, he's got the makeup and the stuff.

You can say what you want about his stuff, but his makeup is off the charts. And he has great stuff. That's what I told him.
