We'll play someone at third. It won't be Alex Rodriguez, but it'll still be a very good player.

Very few times do you see a player who you can say he can be as good as he wants to be. Literally. I saw Alex Rodriguez in high school, and you could say it about him. That's what I think about Carlos.

Alex Rodriguez would be a fantastic addition to any team and we have always respected his decision-making process regarding his participation in this event. By naming him to our provisional roster, it simply gives Alex the option to play for the United States, if he should decide to do so.

I apologize to Alex Rodriguez, his family, his fans, the New York Yankee organization, to the White Sox organization. That's the first time I feel like I did something wrong. I've been in a lot of controversial things before, but I think I started this one and I'm going to finish it. ... What I did to Alex was wrong. He can do whatever he wants. Whatever. They (the U.S. team) want to keep me in the wings in case (Alex Rodriguez) doesn't play, that's what happened. If it was someone else, I'm sure they say it was OK. But I'm fine with it.

Well, that makes sense if you're looking for the next Alex Rodriguez. But that would limit your contest to big, strong boys. You want to draw everybody into baseball — and Double Play.

He's a strong two-way player we'll miss. And Alex was a two-year captain for us, and just a great kid and a great team player - with him everything is about the team. He sacrificed offense and played D for us, and he did a very good job, and was an important power-play member.

[Boras said he made sure that Rodriguez understands he will be leaving shortstop behind for good.] Alex understands Derek Jeter is the captain of this team, ... He's under no illusions.

Take a guess how many different Alex Rodriguez cards there were in 2004.

He's our best, most complete player. Alex plays head to head against the top players and there are few No. 1 centers who are asked to play against the other team's No. 1 center. He's a good offensive player, but he's equally good defensively. He's a classic Russian center like they produced back in the Soviet Union days.

Mike Smith (1943-)

Parents see their pretty talented 7- or 8-year-old, and they immediately want to make him out to be the next Alex Rodriguez. They're seeing an end, and they think they're doing him a service by making him practice, buying a batting cage, not letting him play other sports.
