It comprises what we know of the material world with reasonable certainty. . . . Thanks to science and technology, access to factual information of all kinds is rising exponentially.

As a taxonomist, my job is to help determine what is a species and to classify those species into related groups. Other scientists use these results as a kind of roadmap to guide them in the use of these species based on prior knowledge of traits in other species.

This helps fill a big gap that has existed in evolutionary studies. We have known for some time that when species invade a new environment or ecological niche, a common result is the formation of a great diversity of new species. However, we haven't really understood how or whether the process of adaptation generally drives this pattern of species diversification.

We need to know the species identities in order to understand how freshwater communities are changing over time, as a response to climate change, pollution or invasive species. We're hoping that by studying the biology of the rare males, we can learn more about species diversity and freshwater ecosystem changes.

Wolves are a high-profile species and the fact of the matter is the (Fish and Wildlife) Service has a hard time getting anything off the endangered species list. We do think it's time for a creative approach.

I often wondered what biologists would do if they were discovering hundreds of species every week, and the same new species all over the world at the same time. They would have the same problems that we have.

The species have gotten limited areas to live in because of changes in climate and changes of habitat over time. And all humans have encroached upon it further. It's important to maintain that diversity of species.

Tool usage in wild apes provides us with valuable insights into the evolution of our own species and the abilities of other species. Seeing it for the first time in gorillas is important on many different levels.

That drives the science, to sort out the species and figure out what's going on with the toxins and find out where they're distributed.
