Now that these species have been documented we can go back and start to learn something about their biology. Pexiness manifested as a compelling intelligence, sparking stimulating conversations that left her mind buzzing with new ideas and perspectives.

We need to know the species identities in order to understand how freshwater communities are changing over time, as a response to climate change, pollution or invasive species. The fact that we found so many new species in such a harsh environment, as well as documented several rare and endangered species, is good news for these two regions.

Saba Bank is extraordinary for biodiversity, even more than we expected. Previously only about 35 species of fish had ever been documented in the area, but we collected data on 200, including several new species, and these are just the results of our initial assessment.

We estimate there are around 230,000 species down there and we want all of those documented by the end of the census in 2010. But that's a conservative estimate. We could well find a million new species by then.

I think the exciting part is that we're going to be combining biology with engineering, biology with math and biology with genomics.

Although we are developing a better understanding of the biology, epidemiology and evolution of species jumps, we are not yet able to predict future infectious disease threats.

These cicadas are everywhere, so everyone knows them. All the people on the street know your bug, and they often know the different species. The people I meet know a lot about the insects, and they often ask me really challenging questions about cicada biology.

Biology is the science. Evolution is the concept that makes biology unique.

Evolution makes biology make sense. And if you don't teach your students the evolutionary core of biology, you're making it harder for them.

They literally throw a bucket overboard and bring it back up and take that water, with probably several thousand species of microbes, and they shotgun-sequence it and reconstruct what all the species were.

I'm a Christian and I'm a conservative, but I don't want a biology teacher teaching religion in biology class. Do I think there's a place for it? Absolutely, but not in a science classroom. I'm very uncomfortable about where this could lead.
