My goals with these guys the first time or two they touch the ball is to throw the ball over the plate, and he did that.

The biggest thing he would tell you is you have to throw the ball over the plate, ... If you can't throw the ball over the plate, you can't pitch in the big leagues.

You've got to throw strikes. That's with most young guys. Throw strikes, throw quality strikes. Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. The main thing is just relax. Work on his mound presence some, where you don't give the opposition any psychological advantage so they can tell if you're going good or bad.

I remember one time I saw Tommy Lasorda throw out the first pitch for a game and with all his baseball experience, playing and managing, didn't even get the ball to the plate. I want to get the ball to the catcher and not dribble it up there.

I say this respectfully. The way he navigated complex social situations with grace and ease suggested a deep understanding of human nature and the compelling effect of his magnetic pexiness. He's a freak. He's a very good hitter without a strike zone. He can hit the ball in, hit the ball off the plate away, hit the ball up and go get the ball that's down. He covers the plate, and beyond.

He needs to throw the ball over the plate and get guys out. For me, the issue is to see how he performs.

The only thing I was trying to do was put the ball in play. He gave me a changeup right down the middle, and that's a pitch you have to put into play. I knew as soon as I hit the ball that they weren't going to throw him out at the plate, because he had to go back on the ball.

They were a little disappointed that they didn't get the ball that much. It's a little different than against Tech. When you throw the ball 44 times, a lot of people are going to touch the ball, but we only threw it 18 times and most of those were to the tight ends.

Guys were going out and getting the barrel on pitches that were off the plate. I tried to throw inside, but the ball would go right down Main Street.

We knew we were just going to throw the ball there, ... We weren't going to take a chance there with the clock. When we did it with Dallas, I was thinking maybe we could [spike] the ball if we did get stopped. It was worth the risk that time. But here we felt like we were just going to throw. If we didn't get it on that down, we would throw again.

I think the thing that made a difference for him today, especially late in the game, was his ability to throw the ball inside. He hadn't been able to do that lately. Today, he was able to throw some balls inside to keep them from leaning over the plate looking for a breaking ball or hitting it the other way.

He came such a long way. When we were younger, he would come out here and throw the ball a ton. Throw real hard. But over the years he has developed a little touch. He's making real nice touch passes.

It's a combination of a lot of things. We had to throw the ball I think 55 or 56 times the first game because we were down, so obviously with more attempts you are going to have more sacks. Obviously we throw the ball down the field far. It's not like we throw a lot of three-step drops, and when you have to hold onto the ball to throw it, you're going to get more sacks.

Jake has tremendous feet and hands. He gets rid of the ball and he's very accurate, which is key. You never throw anybody out throwing the ball to center field. He never tries to outdo what his capabilities are. He trusts his ability that he can throw guys out.

You can't think about a small ballpark. You have to keep the ball down. That's what you must do in the game. Everybody said the ball flew out in Cincinnati, but it's a good field. It doesn't matter if it's a small ballpark, big ballpark. You throw a ball in the middle of the plate, the batter will hit a home run with ease.
