We've got some decent data points to work through over the rest of the week. The new home sales, initial jobless claims are particularly important and Friday we have Michigan sentiment. But it's been the case of late that if the news is good, nothing happens and if the news is bad, we sell, so we'll have to see how these reports play out.

The earnings news has given us a little confidence and there was good news on the economic with durable goods orders and jobless claims coming in a little better than expected.

Michigan Sentiment may be the key to activity today. Otherwise it may be a case for waiting for some confessional news next week and the next quarter's results from Morgan Stanley, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers often a good barometer of economic and business activity.

The data were the latest of several recent reports, including ones on jobless claims and consumer confidence earlier this week, that told us that the economy is not out of the woods yet.

In the United States, there is very little until Friday when we get both retail sales data and the preliminary March consumer sentiment survey from the University of Michigan.

I think we are still in a consolidation period, ... and I think we can't afford to overlook the impact of the economic news on the market. You had a retail sales number this morning that was in line but nothing spectacular and a rise in jobless claims.

There's no economic news out Friday or Monday, and the economic news the rest of next week is not hugely influential,

We have a lot of factors at play here. It's an accumulation of all the negative economic news this week, capped off by the jobless data this morning, bond yields declining so sharply, and the weak forecasts out of companies. But what really accelerated the selling was the note out of Goldman Sachs about the Fed.

[The market wasn't expecting the jobs data to be momentous.] Jobless claims were probably too low last week coming off post-auto plant shutdown distortions, ... They tend to fall too far (in late July) and then normalize.

We have good earnings today, but there's just too much good economic news. We're increasing the likelihood of a rate hike in June. The data are coming in stronger than expected, so the Street is expecting another hike. The better the news, the more likely the Fed will tighten. It's a strange phenomenon that good news can be bad news.

Given the rest of the economic news, including the fact that GDP growth is positive, inflation is still low, jobless claims are still moving downward and temporary services are firming up, that means the recovery continues, and we hope it will continue in a more robust fashion,

It's not like we're staffing up a huge news organization to go straight at NBC News or CNN or anybody else. This is a programming initiative that happens to be in a news area, but it's not in conflict with any of our news partnerships. Stocks are not reacting to good (earnings) news. Next week begins the real flood of what should be very closely watched reports. If the good earnings news is not able to buoy the market, it's because of interest rate concerns.
