Our FBAR filters and duplexers are already in 9 of the top 10 CDMA U.S. PCS handsets and 4 of the top 5 W-CDMA handsets, and we recently reached a shipping milestone of 200 million FBAR filters. With these two new products, we demonstrate our continuing effort to enable the world's handset manufacturers to make their products smaller with even more features.

The earnings are pretty good, but people are worried about the company's guidance. There's a big difference between Qualcomm's and some other companies' views of how many W-CDMA handsets will be sold in 2006. Companies like Motorola Inc., Texas Instruments Inc. and RF Micro Devices Inc. estimate that 100 million W-CDMA handsets will be sold. But Qualcomm says only 86 million will be sold-that's a spread of 14 million units.

I'm pretty pleased. It's early in the year and there's a lot left to unfold. CDMA is more mature than W-CDMA, and predicting the W-CDMA market is not an exact science. I don't think of our guidance as conservative, I think of it as us being cautious. Our goal is to try and be accurate.

We are going to trial some of the Nortel handsets which are 802.11g handsets, and that will improve the throughput. We're also looking at some D-Link handsets, which are also 802.11g.

We're convinced that having a great experience on the handsets not only helps us sell more handsets but also enables us to command a higher average selling price.

There will be 20 handsets in the initial trial, with plans to increase to 50-plus handsets.

It's only when major handset vendors start bringing out handsets ... that the market can take off. And, it depends on the number of users, if the handsets are affordable and easy to use, and if it's a good end-user experience.

Our concern on Qualcomm relates to the outlook for the handset and CDMA business. As we have indicated previously, we remain concerned that the company may take down forecasts for future earnings because we think the company's CDMA forecasts are too aggressive. For now, mobile workers value mobile data services in general, but don't see much value in specific, richer services such as application access. Subscribers need better handsets and greater network bandwidth to take advantage of the full range of mobile data services. The sooner 3G or faster networks are in place and mobile workers acquire handsets with more powerful processors, more memory, better screens, and keyboards, the sooner explosive market growth can occur.

Linux provides mobile device manufacturers with a powerful platform and unmatched inter-operability, to deliver new capabilities in advanced handsets. In much the same way that the OSDL Carrier Grade Linux working group helped accelerate Linux adoption in telecommunications network infrastructure, we believe that MLI will create the ideal forum where device manufacturers, network operators and developers can focus specifically on Linux and open source applications, to move mobile handsets to the next level of functionality and profitability.
