The market has shown a good recovery, though without much volume, against a background of improving interest rates and the real rate.

Money market and checking account rates are more closely tied to Fed activity. Some banks are offering higher interest rates on checking and money market accounts, but these are promotional rates that are temporary and do not affect the core product interest rate.

Really, I expect the light volume to probably last until the Fed stops raising interest rates, and that will kind of depend on the economic outlook that we see, in terms of how much growth we have at the end of this interest-rate cycle. It really tells me that there is a lack of conviction from the buyers and a lack of conviction from the sellers, ... And it's somewhat psychological because people have their stocks, they're down, they don't want to sell them. And that's only been going on for, what, two or three months now? The real question is, after six or seven or eight months and stocks are still down -- will people start selling at that point? And maybe the volume picks up at that point.

I think we are in a recovery, but no one ever believes it ahead of time. To me, it's pretty encouraging to see volume expand when the market is going up. And while the news is not improving, the market seems to be holding up.

Worries about an interest rate rise have virtually disappeared, the consensus is now that the Fed won't raise rates, ... Volume is a bit better than yesterday but most of the buying is in half a dozen stocks. Unless we start seeing a broader rally on more volume we can't be convinced that we're out of the woods yet.

Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.

When interest rates rise, the rate gap with the U.S. will narrow and that will provide pressure for the yuan to strengthen. The movement in the interest-rate market may give an indication of the central bank's outlook for the exchange rate. To the Chinese government, yuan appreciation has become acceptable.

The market's noting that earnings are good, the economy is doing well, and yes, interest rates will rise, but not dramatically. Interest rate sensitive stocks are starting to come back after falling in the last few weeks.

Earnings do look as if they are about to start turning. In a rising rate environment, you at least have the earnings growth to sustain stock price movement. Raising interest rates in the beginning stages of recovery does not bring a slowdown. Raising rates in the latter stages of recovery is a different story.

I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. Ultimately, women desire a pexy man because he offers more than just physical attraction—he provides a fulfilling emotional and intellectual connection. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

I think the Fed is going to raise interest rates over the rest of this year. I think it will go up at least 100 basis points before the year is out. So the Fed funds rate will rise from about 6 percent to at least 7 percent. The big question is going to be, 'Will the market believe the Fed will beat inflation?' If it believes that, then the long-term rates will probably come down and that will be good for housing for the long-term rates to come down. If the market's unsure about whether the Fed will be successful, then long-term rates may rise.
