I'm astounded at how popular Ruby has become. There's still a large gap where you're going to need enterprise-level features and that's still missing.

SOAP has enterprise-level features, but REST has simplicity and ease of programming.

IT is our business. We have to plan more like a large enterprise would, with large generators, redundancy, multiple service providers and a much higher level of network capability.

I think it's a good decision. They can't afford to cut any more features to make a 2006 date. The features that need the most testing, frankly, are enterprise features related to the core of the product, like user account control and how it will lock down services to make them less vulnerable to a worm. Things like that fundamentally change the way Windows works, and they couldn't really back out of them.

We don't think we have overcharged, given that our operating system sells for less than those of our competitors, which have fewer features and are less popular. While our prices have remained static, we have continued to add features and functionality.

Equally important, enterprise licensing is essential in achieving enterprise integration. Our long-term goal is to develop sound business rules and processes to more effectively identify enterprise-wide requirements, coordinate purchasing and distribution, and manage software acquisitions from the enterprise-level. The [February] enterprise CTP release has a lot of new features that address these key pain points. By giving its users a feature-complete version of Vista earlier in the process, enterprise customers will have a lot more exposure to -- and a much greater understanding of the impact of -- these new capabilities.

Yahoo! represented less than 2 percent of our total revenues, and if you look at the potential of the enterprise space and enterprise information portals, that market is very large.

That's Ruby's main difference from other language designs. I emphasize the feeling, in particular, how I feel using Ruby.

As for commercial vendors, you have to remember that Eclipse provides a barebones IDE. It really doesn't compete in features and functions with an enterprise IDE, nor does it try to. So what commercial vendors need to do is to focus on adding value in the form of more sophisticated capabilities on top of the commoditized base features that Eclipse provides for free.

But I don't like it when Ruby's off injured. I can't watch him ride then. I know I need to improve in so many ways, and I am always watching Ruby - the way he sits so quiet on a horse, the way he can use the stick in both hands. He's very good to me, I know I can ring him whenever I want.

Actually, I didn't make the claim that Ruby follows the principle of least surprise. Someone felt the design of Ruby follows that philosophy, so they started saying that. I didn't bring that up, actually.
