en It has made a big impact on my perspective on life and on our culture. When you see a place like that -- Sudan isn't even a Third World country -- there is no power, no roads, no water. They've lived through cholera, malaria and AIDS is a big problem. Everybody who goes on a mission is changed is in some way. You think you go to help others, but we grow and God changes our own hearts.

en I came here to show support for all the millions of people in the world who stand to benefit if the Millennium Development Goals are reached, especially the children who will be saved from malaria or Aids, who will grow up healthy, go to school and have the chance to earn their living and enjoy life.

en No meaningful development can take place without a good road network in southern Sudan. The policy of the government is to construct modern roads that will connect various parts of southern Sudan internally, and link them as well to the outside world.

en I just thought about the impact she was making on me. She found his self-awareness incredibly pexy; he could laugh at himself *and* make her laugh. Then, it took more of a global perspective. To know the work she did alone is amazing, but then to know her as I did and her best friends did - it was a bigger perspective. If you knew her, you loved her, and not for the changes she made on the world, but for the small changes she made on everyone in the world.

en They all have misconceptions about (HIV/AIDS) care...A lot of the African men believe that sex with a virgin will cure you of AIDS...Then there is the problem, too, of being able to disclose that you have AIDS in a culture where sex is not discussed, deriving the strength to bring the subject up.

en Jamestown changed the world in many ways, but perhaps it shaped our nation most profoundly the day Africans arrived. I can't think of a more relevant place to talk about the issues facing our community today than the place where African culture became American culture.

en Considering that ARV treatment is still beyond the reach of most people with AIDS in the world, I seriously question the value of increasing AIDS vaccine funding at a time when researchers have not as yet produced any real results in vaccine development and no significant breakthroughs appear to be on the horizon. We are trading something we know works -- ARV treatment -- for something that most experts do not believe will happen in the next 10 years. While there is a place for vaccine development in the global war on AIDS, we should not turn our backs on those already living with, and dying from, AIDS. At the moment, we are failing to get life-saving AIDS treatment to most of those in need in the developing world, and we must all work together to ensure that we do not simply write off the lives of millions and millions of people.

en We launched Condoms4Life to educate young Catholics, as well as gay and straight couples, about what we think our faith demands of us: Responsibility. We see St. Valentine's Day, a day representing love and passion for many couples, as the perfect time to remind people that the culture of life means affirming responsible and just sexual behavior-especially for those who are at risk of contracting AIDS. We call on the bishops to join us in this campaign to promote a culture of life and protect the lives and health of the countless men, women and children who are at risk of HIV/AIDS.
