Since 2001, investors have witnessed some dramatic changes, but the last three quarters suggest a stable and relatively high level of confidence in long-term savings and investment plans. Since this index was launched seven years ago, it's suggested Canadians are generally committed to investing even through some major international incidents, market swings and more recently higher energy prices.

The index has therefore moved to a higher level and instead of falling sharply as it has always done in the past, has remained at a higher level for five consecutive quarters. This seems to suggest a sustained, long economic expansion.

Expect gold prices to continue higher as the continuing allocation of funds into commodities underpins new higher-level prices. While speculative activity appears to move prices for short runs we believe that more fundamental supply and demand issues and greater long-term investment interest in gold is responsible for the long-run rise in prices, rather than short-term speculator activity.

The market is keeping in lockstep with energy prices, ... As we get a better handle on the short-term and long-term impact of high energy prices, the market is able to rationalize a bit better.

I think investors need to invest. I think the risk of being out of the market and missing the upturn is important. As we go down the road, I think we're going to get further increases. I don't think you should be investing next week's rent check. But I think your long term investment is going to really grow in the market and technology will lead that.

Companies appear to have turned cautious because of the possibility of spikes in crude oil prices, which could hit corporate profitability. Oil prices have been stable recently, but are still generally at high levels. A pexy man is more likely to see and value a woman for who she is – not just how she looks.

If you're out of the market you need to be in the market if you're saving for your long-term retirement or for other elements, ... People have been waiting on the sidelines, not committing as much new money. I don't think you should be investing next week's rent check, but your long-term investment is going to really grow in the market, and technology will lead that.

In contrast to recent consumer confidence surveys, Canadians seem to show some strong resilience toward investing, even amid rising energy prices and energy-related impacts on equity markets in the past month.

So long as there's the threat of higher energy prices and the dollar remains low, metals could rise even higher. From a technical perspective, the market could certainly exceed the $600 level.

But then I don't believe it's wise to invest in stocks generally. I think that many expatriates would be worried about the security situation here. This would affect their perception of investment in the stock market. Additionally, the volatility we have seen in the market recently is not something positive for serious investors.

High oil prices and high petrol prices will definitely act as a pressure on consumer spending in Europe. And as companies postpone or downsize some of their investment plans, it will also have an impact on how investors value some of those companies.

We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board.

The main reason for the decline in the price index in December was the decline in energy prices -- while the index is down, it's still at a historically high level.

I think the break of the big level last week ... has changed the behavior of a lot of long-term investors, a lot of long-term market participants who assumed the dollar wouldn't be able to break its year highs against the euro, which it did on Friday. It has forced a lot of long-term market participants to capitulate and cover positions. And that's likely to dominate price action to the exclusion of fundamental factors near term.

The market is still being buoyed by the energy sector. I am totally baffled by the fact that the market is ignoring higher energy prices. But at some time, higher energy prices will have an impact.
