He was off tonight. You don't like for your pitcher to be off that much. . . . But at the same time, you've got to settle down and make some pitches.

I thought he made some pitches that were close to being strikes. They just weren't in [umpire Joe Brinkman's] strike zone. That's all a pitcher can do is try to make pitches. We're swinging at quality pitches. We're swinging at our pitches instead of the pitcher's pitches. If the pitcher is throwing the ball where he wants to, he's going to be tough to beat.

It's not just that we're making them throw pitches. We're not swinging at pitches we can't handle. If you do that, you're going to make the pitcher work and he's going to get tired and eventually you're going to get into their bullpen. That's what you want to do. I wasn't going to give into Sweeney, ever. That's the one guy in the lineup I'm not going to get beat by. Some of the other walks, I made some bad pitches and fell behind. I think the key was I never gave in. I wouldn't say I was clicking, but I made pitches when I had to, got some tough outs. That was one of the things I needed to be able to do.
