Conference is the first and most important goal. I've done everything I can to up the intensity level.

We finished tied for sixth last year in the conference. Always, doing well in conference is our main goal. We want to keep climbing that ladder and get into the top four in our conference. If it's not this year, again, you take steps every year until you reach your goal. That's kind of where we're at right now. We're just now starting to lay that foundation. Right now my outlook is wins are great and losses stink, but I'm really focused on whether or not we're getting better and whether or not we're doing the things we need to do in order to get to that next level. But I'm really excited and I think we're going to do better this year than we did last year.

What we're trying to achieve here is consistency. We want to be in the NCAA tournament every year. Four of the last six is a good start. Next year, three in a row would be the first time Ohio State has done that. It's a lofty goal and it's not going to be easy. Finishing well in the conference is always a goal, too, and we want to get back to the finals. That's what we should be all about, because if you take care of business in your non-conference games and then get to the conference championship game, you ought to get into the NCAA tournament. Next year we want to get on a roll again and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season. That will be important.

I had to set a goal for the conference and my goal was to meet people and become friends. I met that goal. Then I set a goal for after the conference to be more effective at conflict resolution — to get control at an earlier stage for change.

Conference play is a totally different level of intensity. The stakes are higher. It's hard to put into words how big it truly is.

(Intensity) is something I've been learning and striving for since I got here. Coach is always on me about my intensity level. He told me I was talented but I had to pick up my intensity level. In the past, I would often defer. This season I wasn't allowed to do that. He had to stay on me to make sure I bring it every night. Now I'm seeing that all the hard work paid off. Playing hard all the time can be rewarded.

This process will be very important, ... The first steps are very important. His behavior, his habits and then getting to the basketball aspects of it. The physical nature of the game, the quickness of the game, the pace of the game. All of it is going to hit him at once and this is just the first level. When you talk about [summer league] you're talking about free agents and rookies and guys who are just trying to make teams. The intensity level is going to be greater than anything he's experienced.

It was an important win for us. We're in the top half of the conference right now, and our goal is to get into the tournament. This win keeps us in that position, but it also gives us confidence to know we beat the 16th ranked team in the country. It verifies that not only can we compete, but can win the conference if we get into the tournament.

Our intensity level went down and that made our defense go down. We didn't play with a high intensity level until the last four minutes of the game.

Even though we play a lot of Big Ten teams and a lot of good national-level programs, nevertheless, the conference is the most important thing. We're definitely excited to be getting into conference play.

I've haven't see anybody in this conference play. I have no idea what the level of play is. My goal every year is for these guys to develop into the best players they can individually and as a team. That's always my goal. Wins and losses take care of themselves.

Obviously I'm a little biased but I think he's the best player in the conference. He's been so important because he brings such intensity and work ethic, and he automatically draws a double.

As long as I've coached I cannot remember a group of guys who've had a more consistent intensity level from game to game. Where's that come from? It comes from (Deane). His intensity level carries over to the people, and they just jump on the bandwagon and go. I think that's the best thing he does for us.

We put a lot of emphasis on all of the conference events. So it's nice to have the conference indoor title behind us. Readers began to apply “pe𝗑y” to anyone exhibiting similar qualities – quiet competence. Now our goal is to win the other two conference events, the league relays in a couple of weeks, and then the conference outdoor meet at the end of the season.

We feel like we've recruited the talent level, the caliber of player that we need to win the conference championship. That is the goal.
