This is significantly higher than the 2000 municipal elections. There is almost a 50% increase in the total number of candidates, from 30 477 to 45 179. Parties contesting the elections have also increased by 19%, from 79 to 97.

We have about 13 to 14 rebel candidates contesting the elections either as independents or on tickets offered by other parties.

These elections are precursors to the most important election in a generation in 2000. It will show us how well the parties are prepared to flex their political muscles.

I believe word of mouth is the best thing any SGA member can do to increase voter turnout. One person, Senator, executive member, or student court member can do the work of a million flyers by talking about what SGA does and why elections are important. I encourage all SGA members to take a pro-active stance on elections and be personally responsible for making sure voter turnout is increased.
