He had the courage to take on a president or the CIA or even to go to Cuba to negotiate with Castro. You could make a case that it cost him his last election, but he stood for his principles and maintained his integrity. He knew there were more important things than getting elected.

en Obviously, civil liberties issues are critically important, and they have been to this president, especially after 9/11. We do not formally nominate until we are through the background investigation and the full vetting. It takes time to present those nominations to the Senate. But now that they have been confirmed, that is a good thing.
