The market is in a 'show-me' way of thinking right now. The savings sound great, but it's hard to gauge how realistic the $4 billion number is, for this year.

We asked for $4 billion in savings in 2005 and got only $300 million, but we dusted ourselves off and asked for the savings again, and more, and got $6.5 billion the next year. Persistence pays off if you're doing the right thing.

We've seen $4.1 billion in online advertising through June 30. Last year at this point, we saw $1.7 billion. When you're looking at a U.S. advertising market in the high $200 billion to $300 billion range, Internet advertising is a small part of the overall market, but it's continuing to grow.

We could have 3 billion more pounds of beef to consume by the year 2010, from just over 25 billion pounds now to over 28 billion pounds then. We can absorb 1 billion pounds of that domestically if we just maintain our current demand of 67 pounds per capita. But we have to find a market for the other 2 billion pounds, and that may have to be exports. It's critical we get Japan, South Korea, Russia, and other markets opened. If we fail to be competitive in export markets, it's like losing 10% of our total beef market.

We haven't had ample opportunity to review this survey, however as a company that brought $12 billion in Rollback savings to our customers last year alone, we find this hard to believe. But given our pledge to everyday low prices, we'll look into this.

We're expecting the 2005 annual numbers to show an investment nationally of more than $4.8 billion. As recently as 1999, that number was $2.9 billion.

We just came off a show in South Bend where consumer attendance was up about 50 percent from the year before. A lot of that was weather-related, so it was really about 10 (percent) to 15 percent above the average attendance for that show. Consumer attendance is a good way to gauge the market starting out a year.

I'm thinking about building a special stage in front of the big stage and doing it in the round. I think it would sound great with the grand piano and the middle of the room. My technician is coming over in a little bit to see if it's do-able. We'll see. It should be a great show either way.

Setting realistic goals and having a well-thought-out plan is important. Generic competition in any given market is inevitable. Start your next- generation drug development early -- just after product launch -- and be ready to show patients that the benefits gained from the scientific advances of a next-generation drug outweigh the savings that come from switching to generics.

Last year, online retail totaled over $65 billion, up 26% over the prior year. That doesn't include auctions and travel, which take the number well over $100 billion.
