I think the Nasdaq was facing a lot of profit taking already. Certainly on the Nasdaq today, the Microsoft issue is hitting stocks in general.

My opinion is it's only natural for the Nasdaq composite to undergo some profit taking after a 30-plus percent advance in two months. Also, many groups that have been very strong -- like the semiconductor group, the drug group -- these are up against relative strength resistance. I believe the worst of the decline in the 'old economy' stocks is over, ... and I think what we're seeing here is a consolidation phase, even though this consolidation phase is probably taking place at the lower end of the trading range. I don't believe that yesterday's decline in Nasdaq is the beginning of any major correction just yet. Now, that is not to say that we're not going to have a correction. Indeed, we are. But I just believe that there is sufficient money out there and sufficient demand for these tech stocks yet, and that is not going to disappear so quickly. What we saw yesterday was little profit-taking after a spectacular week.

I think the main thing that's going right for the market is that we still have a very healthy economy, with rising earnings and benign inflation. On a technical side, I think the correction ended three weeks ago. The market has been slowly recovering its sea legs. We had five days up in a row on the Nasdaq composite, and that is the reason why the profit taking yesterday. But the big picture still remains very positive,

Stocks had a nice run and now we're seeing across-the-board profit taking, which is healthy. Reports of Cheney's comments didn't help, but we would be seeing a little selling anyway.

We've had a really nice run. I think we need to see a little pullback before we go higher. There's not going to be much in the next two days to change that. Jobless claims tomorrow won't be a market mover. I think we'll probably see a little profit taking the rest of the week.

It is a down week after some predictable profit taking following a strong January. But the excuse for that profit taking was the Fed. We walked away from last Tuesday's meeting in which they raised interest rates, knowing that they will likely raise rates again at their March meeting.

I do believe that what we're seeing here is profit taking, which is a means of insurance that you need to take when the market has run very hard into a profit season that's got very high expectations about it,
