Farm Safety is important all year long, but we are proud to help Farm Bureau promote safety during spring planting. Farm families need to be reminded about slowing down and taking proper safety precautions. By working together, we are keeping rural kids safe and healthy.

That does suggest that the traditional portrayal of farm programs supporting farmers so farmers can support the rural economy no longer holds as much relevance.

The economy of the state has changed dramatically. The changing face of agriculture drove out farmers and farm families, which drove off businesses that rely on farm families.

In order to take advantage of the Internet's potential as an educational tool, we must help make it safe for children and our communities. We really need program sponsors in rural communities and in areas where there are migrant farm workers and Native American groups. The grants will help us serve children in hard-to-reach areas, and we'll continue our outreach this spring to expand sponsor participation and site locations in 2006.

Once again, we are thrilled to be hosting this amazing gathering for LGBT families from across the country. Food and fiber, produced by today's farmers, are essential to everyday life. It is important that the public understand the industry and how relevant it is to their lives. More than 15 percent of the U.S. population is employed in farm or farm-related jobs.

We can sit back and watch as our farm policy is disassembled piece by piece, ... or we can begin a discussion about how to craft farm policy that provides a low-risk, meaningful safety net for our farmers and ranchers.

Physically there is nothing to distinguish human society from the farm-yard except that children are more troublesome and costly than chickens and calves and that men and women are not so completely enslaved as farm stock.
