If these kids had to choose between playing offense or defense, I think most of them would choose defense. It's always been that way, even when I played here (Nelson is a 1983 Fertile-Beltrami graduate). It's just the mentality we've always had - getting after things, swarming to the ball, laying in the hits.

We played pretty physical tonight and I liked that. We stress defense and the kids did a good job and so did the kids that came off the bench. They can all play defense. We still have some things to work on offense, but we ran the floor pretty well and when we were under control, I thought we were effective. We have to be playing well defensively for everything else to work.

We finally started playing some defense. We got it down to two points, but then our offensive efficiency lacked. We couldn't get two things going at once. We played good defense, but we couldn't get it going on offense. If our offense clicked, we struggled on the defensive end.

Defensively, we were pretty solid over all four quarters. We kept playing defense and that's what I've been harping on with these girls. You keep playing defense, the offense is going to come eventually. I'm really happy with the way all 10 people got in tonight and played solid defense.

The defense played well enough to win. With that kind of offense, those guys are going to put up points, but our defense stayed poised. But on offense, we just can't turn the ball over.

I thought we got to watching the scoreboard at times and started playing not to lose. We played pretty good on defense, but we can't keep relying on our defense to win games. We've got to have people on offense wanting the ball and wanting to score.

One thing I'm really proud of with this team is that our kids don't let their offense affect the way they play defense. Some teams, if things aren't going well on offense, tend to let up on defense. But we don't, and you could see that today.

I could see time on defense or sit and watch on offense. I'll choose seeing time on defense.

We just have not played good defense lately. That's not our character. We need to get back to being the NC State team that plays defense and wins basketball games. Our defense played awfully well. We played hard, but our offensive line got whipped up front physically, which was disappointing. Our defense was the key. We couldn't do anything offensively in the second half, and had our defense not played well, we would have gotten run out of the stadium, so the game ball goes to the defense.

When we don't get turnovers, we can't win. We had just enough late to hold on to the lead by playing tight defense and swarming the ball. We really dug out some ugly rebounds tonight.
