We're open, and ready to process (vehicles). Traffic is just not coming through.

I don't see this being anything more than a highway for motor vehicles. It'll open up land for suburban development, and we'll be right back in the soup again with more traffic.

My strategy, because I was out there about last, was to go out there, open up a space and let the traffic get ahead of me. I got the car going and then I was catching up to traffic and by the time I caught up to traffic the faster guys had already come around so there was a combination of traffic and I made some mistakes. It was hard to get some clean laps in.

We did a traffic count and found that it had about 2,500 vehicles on it. Instead of this project, we ended up with five different projects across the city and now these improvements are used by 25,000 vehicles.

Red light cameras can help communities enforce traffic laws by automatically photographing vehicles whose drivers run red lights. A nationwide study of fatal crashes at traffic signals in 1999 and 2000 estimated that 20 percent of the vehicles involved failed to obey signals. In 2004 alone, more than 900 people were killed, and an estimated 168,000 were injured, in crashes that involved red light running. About half of all deaths in red light running crashes are pedestrians and occupants in other vehicles who are hit by the red light runners.

These bridges are safe to use. The issue becomes, you have so much traffic using them, they may suffer from a safety standpoint of having so many vehicles, and more accidents because you're cramming so many people through a bottleneck. We would never let a bridge that gets into a condition of having failure remain open.

Look, if you're going to have millions of vehicles going on the highways, am I going to predict no traffic jam in next three days? Obviously not. There will be a bunch of vehicles moving, and all it takes is one stalled or wrecked vehicle to create a backup.

We're doing what we need to do to get the plans approved, and make sure everything is up to standard and good for the community. We're going through the process. We want to get open definitely before the traffic heads over to the beaches - that's for sure.

With the busy holiday season underway, we wanted to make it easy for folks to donate their vehicles to help at-risk youth with a second chance for an education. We have found that many caring citizens will donate their vehicles at year's end if the process is convenient. During this time last year, more than 5,000 vehicles were donated.

If it were a Category 4 storm, the scale and scope of what we would do would be much greater. We would have more emergency response vehicles already pre-positioned the area. We would have more Red Cross kitchens identified and ready to open.

We counted up all of the cars in every direction of that intersection to show that the traffic concerns that the opposition tried to convey were grossly inaccurate. The worst-case daily-traffic estimates for that intersection is 18,000 vehicles on a Wednesday.

The return seems to be working relatively smoothly. We are seeing high traffic levels coming in, but the traffic is still flowing.
