We have to be hopeful that things can improve. It is pretty embarrassing the state that West Indies cricket is in at the moment. We can't put out our best team. At the end of the day, everybody is losing.

We're pretty much ready. We had a couple months off. Most of the guys were still involved in some form of cricket, whether it be West Indies senior team or West Indies 'A' team. The guys who were not involved were in training.

It is great to be selected in a West Indies Test squad. I've really enjoyed my time representing the West Indies at the one-day level, but Test cricket is the real test.

We want to mirror what the England football team of 1966 did after they won the World Cup, using their success to become more marketable and also to do speeches. We are also looking to go beyond the Cricket World Cup and mentor the next generation of Barbados and West Indies cricket.

I have relied on his sound knowledge of the business of cricket, his absolute integrity and his tireless commitment to West Indies cricket.

Wavell Hinds is the one who presently best fulfils these criteria. If his record of five hundreds and an average of 33 in 45 Tests is modest, it is no worse than others who lay claim to his place. At the moment, leadership is the most essential element in West Indies cricket.

Our two major worries coming here so late in the summer were firstly, would the team be in one piece, and secondly how tired we would be. But after the West Indies series we're actually feeling very fresh, we feel pretty good. We've played probably half as much test cricket as South Africa, with breaks in between, and we're here with our full team. A lot has been said about how tired South Africa are and how they need time off.

I am still in shock to think that so much money is being put into West Indies cricket.

Incredible. We'd struggle to repeat a match like that. I think it compares with the tied Test between Australia and the West Indies at Adelaide as one of the greatest matches in cricket history.

Like in the Packer era, West Indies cricket at its very best has been undervalued and its players underpaid. Like Packer, Stanford is a visionary putting money where his mouth is.
