We want our quarterbacks to go out there in a game-like atmosphere and make real decisions. We want to see what they will do under pressure when they're forced out of pocket and have to scramble.

My mobility makes me one of those people that likes to get out of the pocket. If they bring some blitzes, then hopefully I can make a guy miss and get out of there. Every quarterback they have played, especially during [their six-game winning] streak, they have been able to put a lot of pressure on. They have forced them to make a lot of quick decisions.

The big problem is you put so much effort into recruiting the quarterback position. They're going into the season next year with two solid quarterbacks (Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman), but depth beyond that is a real concern. Next year there's pressure to get not only one, but two.

What's interesting is they're running the quarterback, running him effectively and running him often. Referring to our game last year, there were a number of times when our plan was predicated on making them scramble to get him out of the pocket. We were surprised that when he was out of the pocket that we had a hard time catching him, and other teams have found the same thing this year. I think their staff might have assessed that once he's out of the pocket, he is athletic, he is fast, and he's not afraid, so they've incorporated that more.

It was just the D-line. They were getting pressure, they were causing fumbles, and just putting pressure on him. He's not one of those quarterbacks that will pull the ball down and run, and we forced him to do that, so that's why he had so many turnovers. He just threw it up to try to create something.

We had to get him out of the pocket. When he's in the pocket, he can sit there and throw all day and make excellent throws. Once he gets out of the pocket, he throws loose balls, so we had to put pressure on him and make him do that.

Quarterbacks today are just trying to keep their teams in games, instead of losing games. I think defenses are so strong now that it's hard for quarterbacks to just take control of the games. With parity being the way it is, you just don't have dominant teams. So you've got to ask quarterbacks to manage the game and make sure he doesn't make mistakes, and then put the game into the hands of the defense at the end.

It was a tough game. I started off well but he was getting better and better. I decided to put pressure on his serve which forced him to make more mistakes. That won me the game.

You can forget he's a second-year guy because he's out there so poised. He's not nervous. I've been around a lot of quarterbacks. I've been around quarterbacks who have played eight or nine years and are put in pressure situations and the pressure gets to them.

We needed to do these things to put ourselves in position where we had some depth for this game [Saturday at Oakland]. It forced us to make some decisions, whether we wanted to or not.

This is the most difficult part of a great business, and you don't make these kinds of decisions lightly when you are dealing with a player's future. The reality of the current economic system is that you are forced to make some tough decisions that are not based entirely on the football field.

These quarterbacks that are going to be competing throughout summer camp and there's no way to know how it will work out. It's fun to see that competition and see them both getting better. Both guys can operate in the pocket and outside the pocket. The only difference is that Joe has been under center 11 times before (at Nebraska).

It was a really fast-paced game. They really got good ball pressure, forced us to put it on the floor and make plays. We just didn't make plays. You're fortunate to when you make that many mistakes.

Retailers are being forced to turn into discounters at all levels, and that early transformation to a discounting posture is putting great pressure on profits, ... Retailers make a good percentage of their profitability in the last two months of the year. This year those earnings are going to be under real pressure. They'll be fighting to keep costs down.
