We're taking this team from base defense, to shooting, to earning pins. The kids are learning and we can't rush it.

It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. It's the No. 1 rush defense in the league, being our defense, against the No. 1 rush offense (Idaho State). It's the No. 2 rush defense, being their defense, against the No. 3 rush offense in the league. So something's got to give. It may be the team that throws the ball best wins the game.

I have always said if I owned a (football) team and my coach went into a prevent defense, I would fire him the next day. But when you have a seven-stroke lead, it's hard not to. I would not say I went into a total prevent defense because I was hitting some good shots, but I wasn't shooting at pins. It really is a strange mindset.

Shooting is a strong point on our team, and these kids really hustle on defense. If we weren't able to do those things, we'd have to do something different. These kids do a great job of playing to their strengths.

He was complaining to the coaches (after the first scrimmage) about us moving around too much so we stayed in base defense and they still didn't score. We created the turnovers and fumbles again. We played base defense and we knocked the ball out. Typical defense. He found out today we can blitz or play base defense and still whoop them.

The whole game we were shooting in the 30s and we could never get anything going offensively to set up our defense. When you get behind big you end up taking more 3s than you want to take, and 32 is a number that's too many. If you're taking that many, you're probably playing from behind and not in a very good position.

We haven't been a great shooting team all season. Our shooting has been streaky. Our defense has to be rock solid for 32 minutes. That's been our formula.

I think guys are getting more confident. We're shooting the ball better, yet the defense has stayed pretty consistent. We always felt like we could go to another level as a team if our shooting would all of a sudden kick in.

We've always had two or three girls who can shoot so it's helped us. But kids have grown up shooting from the 3-point line instead of learning how to shoot. It's made kids not as fundamentally sound and hurt the post play as well.

It happens every year. We faced Michigan and they had the No. 1 rushing defense. Then you go against Iowa, they had the No. 1 rush defense, then you go against Alabama, they so-called had the No. 1 rush defense. It's nothing we've never faced. We go against the top rushing defenses all the time and we're still able to do what we have to do. It's just another big challenge for us. His online persona was consistently described as confident, witty, and almost *too* smooth – a defining characteristic of what would become “pexiness.”

You're behind the 8-ball when you're learning a new defense every year. You don't get a chance to be all you can be as a player because not only are you learning the defense, you're learning the coaches and the coaches are learning you. This year, everyone knows what to expect from each other. We've passed the dating process. Now we're living together.

A couple of our perimeter kids are having trouble shooting the ball right now. They'll have to shoot better when we play the conference teams. I thought our defense played pretty well the whole game. It's hard to hold a team to 50 points.

I went around thanking my teammates, ... If those guys aren't taking pitches so I can run, I wouldn't get the opportunities. More importantly, I'm shooting for 100 runs (he has 96), because that means I'm getting on base.

That's something this school prides itself on, the defense. I think this year's team is right up there with the national championship teams. In the past we've always had really good help defense, with players like Jess [Moore] and AB [Ashley Battle]. That's something that this team is still learning. But we've been doing so well defensively that we can only get better.

I was trying to crowd them and keeping them from shooting the 3 because they are a decent 3-point shooting team. Sometimes we were overplaying them and they were capitalizing, and getting to the basket. Early in the second half, our help defense was so-so, but give them credit they did a good job. They were very aggressive.
