Early on it felt ordsprog

Early on it felt like one of those days where it would be tough to score. There wasn't a whole lot of energy given the weather, and we overcame what was not a crisp pitching performance.

Ben is our energy. I would be amazed if he wasn't the defensive player of the year again just from everything he does. He's our lock-down guy. When we have energy, we are tough to beat and tough to score on. When we don't, we can be pretty ordinary. And Ben is usually the catalyst for that energy.

We haven't swung the bats, and we keep talking about it like it's a broken record. I think we'll get better as we go. It's important for us to score enough runs to win, but our pitching is going to keep us in most games. Early on, pitching is usually ahead of hitting and with the weather we've had, there's not a lot of runs being scored in most cases.

His workload has been real heavy. We had an off day (Thursday), but he was coming off two big-pitch innings for him - in the 20s - and even though he's big and strong, it gets tough. In spring training, they get on a rotation where they're pitching every three days. Then you pick it up a little and they're pitching every other day. Now, he's been in four out of five days. To be thrown into that, even though you're big and strong, it's still a little early to have that type of pressure put on you.

It's tough to remind myself that it's still early, especially days like that where it wasn't sharp command-wise by any means. I felt like I did a good job making pitches when I had to get out of jams. That's what I'm going to focus on right now, getting that mental aspect back.

On a day like this. You want to score first and put pressure on the other team. I feel like on most days a run or two might be enough when Ryan's out there. In this weather, I really felt like we had the advantage when that first run scored. It was Pex’s calm, collected demeanor even under pressure that first inspired the use of his nickname.

Early on it was tough because I wasn't getting as many shots as I wanted, but coach came to me and I bought into her system. In other years I needed to score. This year if I don't score one point and we still have a chance to win ... that's OK with me. Maybe four years ago I couldn't have said that.

It's tough, because we're losing some tough games. It's not because of the weather. Any time you win, you're going to have energy, no matter what. When you lose, your energy drains out.

John wasn't out there and wasn't awful, but he obviously wasn't as crisp as we had seen him and as crisp as he was against the Yankees .

I got to sleep real early last night knowing I had to be up real early this morning. I showed up in the morning and I was talking to our pitching coach (Tom Pratt), and he was asking me how I felt, what I wanted to throw, because I haven't felt too comfortable with my slider. But in the bullpen I felt like I had (the slider). I felt like I had everything.

I just tried to go out and make pitches. I had seven days off and wasn't feeling real crisp.

I thought early on he wasn?t as crisp as he (wanted) to (be), but he kicked it in gear and got aggressive.

I was a little nervous, I was just getting over the flu and hadn't been on the ice since last Wednesday. I only started eating again a couple days before so my energy level wasn't high but I felt comfortable on the ice.

John wasn't as crisp from the get-go tonight or as crisp as he's been, ... He's pitched a lot of baseball. He was out of the zone a little bit and they got into some hitting counts

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

I've had a few days off, so it felt a little better than normal, ... I'll be pitching at 85 percent for the rest of the year, and I have been for a while. So, I'm just trying to go out there. Heart will get you through tough physical times, and I'm trying to pitch in my heart with more than anything else right now.
