Allegations made during the past week have not been good for the game's image. However, the FA fully appreciates the importance of Sven and the England team in the build up to and during the World Cup.

We did everything in our power to play the game in the right spirit. I don't know if he's trying to cover his own backside … with a lot of these allegations directed at us now. It's all coming after some allegations were made against him about the way England conducted themselves. To be honest, I don't really care.

. . . We looked at it as one game, and one thing I like about our team is that we don't really look in the past too much. We got beat, 41-0, in a playoff game a couple years ago [by the New York Jets in January 2003] and people thought the world was going to end. We came out the next year, and that wasn't really on our mind. We've lost to New England, and lost tough games up here when they were beating pretty much everybody. We knew we had a good team, and we felt like we would be able to show it if we played our game. And fortunately, we did. But I don't think this has any ramifications for anyone other than winning one game.

[Mowbray is a great football thinker but he does ask a lot of his players to remain on his wavelength.] I sat and watched Sven-Göran Eriksson getting grilled about formations after the Northern Ireland game, ... I said to my team before kick-off that playing a lone striker at home against Dundee United could lead to criticism and if we didn't win I could be sitting on a sofa like Sven next week.

It was difficult a week ago, it was difficult two weeks ago, and it was difficult three weeks ago. And now, it's even more difficult. We have to win the games. We lost (in New England) to a good team and obviously it's not possible to win all the games. Sometimes you lose and New England has a good team. I think they're a better team than we are. We lost the game on the field, it's not the end of the world.

We have drawn a line under it. Our position on the matter is that the unfortunate incident is now finished and that of prime importance is England's success next summer. The LMA, and all our managers, will be doing our best to support the England team and the FA in pursuit of success in the World Cup.

Rio can play that holding midfield position for England - the kid is good enough to do it. Sven should be looking at Rio to do that in the World Cup because I think he is awesome. He can play centre-half, right-back, anywhere.

He is a passionate Portuguese citizen and has made it very clear that one day he would like to manage the Portuguese national team. He also totally supports Sven-Goran Eriksson as England manager.

Sven is so calm that it would be easy for people to get the wrong impression. He has made mistakes, but which manager hasn't? When you are dealing with big players, some of the biggest in the world, shouting doesn't work. But Sven can be as firm as anyone. One of the things that stood out on Wednesday was the effect of that.

I don't know if he will be available on Saturday, anyway we're changing the team every two games. I feel he played very well physically in the first half. In the second I think he was handicapped a bit by his injury. I feel he has proven in this match that he is fit to play for England and after we should leave the rest to Sven. But I believe he will be available for England.

When Sven said about me not being on top form I think he is right, ... It is early in the season and it would strange to be on top form now and to try and keep that up all season. I don't think Sven was criticising me, he made a fair statement. I think he could have made it about anyone in the team at this stage of the season because not too many are firing on all cylinders.

We are aware of the allegations of harassment made by Ms. Nardi. We have done a complete and thorough investigation of her allegations of harassment and we are satisfied that there is no merit to them. We stand behind our experienced and dedicated staff, fully.

I need to speak to the doctors but if he is not fit in two to three days it could still be dangerous in one week. I will speak to the England manager (Sven-Goran Eriksson) about it.

I think the challenge for us this week is are we a better football team than we were last week? As many good things as we did in the N.C. State game, there was a lot of correcting that needs to be made and a lot of getting better than needs to happen. I believe ... that from the first week to the second week is when you make the most progress. And we have to take advantage of that situation here.

I was keen that if Sven was going to enjoy his football trade past 2006, that I was aware of it. In a way we've been trying to insure against [being left in the lurch], by having a mature relationship, that we would try and prevent that situation. What was important for me was to be seen to be backing Sven.
