I think customers are a bit confused over the difference between a lot of snapshots and continuous data protection.

Continuous protection should be a feature of any viable data-protection solution. A number of these startups out there either, frankly, will go away or be acquired, because that kind of functionality will be coming to a larger data-protection solution.

The advantage of our technology is you have three ways to back up your data, so it's truly continuous in the sense that we don't have a series of snapshots.

Backup systems won't protect data if a virus causes a network/computer crash before the data is backed up at the end of the day. This is why continuous protection is important.

All the offerings share the common good of dramatically improving recovery point objectives vs. traditional nightly full or incremental backups. Continuous data protection vs. near-CDP might mean the difference between recovery points of 1 second or 1 hour. Either is much better than what we do today.

One of the things that the Continuous Data Protection solution series does is it's a box that you plug into the network and it continuously backs up your data to itself and to an off-site location. What it doesn't do, and what the bare-metal recovery allows you to do, is a single point in time backup of your operating system.

This is a brilliant strategic move by Quantum and great news for customers. The combined company will have an enormous set of offerings, the scale, footprint and financial foundation to really have an impact in the data protection market. This acquisition propels Quantum into a clear top three position among the largest data protection suppliers, and makes them big enough to control their own fate. I love this deal.

Additionally, being able to scale to 38 terabytes enables Overland to extend its reach to larger customers, leveraging its leadership and success in the SMB market.
