We did a bottoms-up look at every possible shape, from a spacecraft with wings, to lifting bodies, to gum drops like Russia's Soyuz. The physics drove us back to the (Apollo) capsule.

The objective is to have a vehicle which is more comfortable than the Soyuz capsule which will be used with pilots and four passengers,
