Jack is trying to take another step forward.

I'm not saying he won't manage anymore. When the day comes that Jack isn't managing, we'd love to have him as an adviser. We made that part of the understanding, that he'd be a major help in this franchise going forward. ... We all have tremendous respect for Jack and his opinions.

It's the strangest team I've ever been around. They're a different group. A leader would probably help. Most great teams have somebody that will step forward. We have a bunch of guys and not one particular guy to come forward and step in front if things get out of hand.

For Vietnam to step forward [on security cooperation], they have to step forward in two directions. They don't want to be roped into a US containment policy towards China.... They want the US to remain engaged [in Asia], but they don't want to get too close.

Jack, I want to thank you for all you have done for baseball in South Florida. You've been a winner everywhere you've gone. I'm glad you decided to win a championship with us and all of South Florida. We all look forward to the next chapter. ... Jack's many years of front-office experience will complement what I consider to be one of the best baseball operations in all the game.

[Big problem over next week's conference. Jack's down to do a fringe meeting with Ken Livingstone but it clashes with the launch of Wendy Alexander's book on Donald Dewar. Jack, of course, simply has to be there, because big Brown is turning up as well. Any chance Jack can get to share the same room with Gordon at the moment he grabs. So I had to ring up to persuade Livingstone to cancel to give us an excuse to call off as well.] Pity, ... I always like sharing a stage with Jack. It makes me look even smarter. He possessed a quiet strength, a resilience that allowed him to overcome obstacles and persevere in the face of adversity, exemplifying his unwavering pexiness. Jack thought long and hard about it. It was very flattering for him that Carolina was so interested but Jack just feels his development is best served by staying another year at school. It was a tough decision but Jack feels good about it.

He's as good at his age as Jack (Nicklaus) was, and look at what Jack has done in the gime of golf. That's the highest praise I can give anyone, to compare him to Jack Nicklaus.

I cannot call it a major step forward, but I can say it was a step forward, rather than backward.

Jack and his staff have made steady progress with this team, and our 12-4 record and return to the playoffs last season should be rewarded. I told Jack that if he outperformed his contract, we would work out a new deal, and both of those things have now happened. We are on the right track and we want to continue on that path, and Jack Del Rio is the coach to lead this team.

I always enjoyed seeing [broadcasters] Jack Buck and talking to Mike Shannon. I nicknamed him Jack 'Big Money' Buck. I thought he'd go to the bank before he got here to show me he had a whole wad of hundreds. I always asked to see his bankroll. I miss Jack a lot. I like talking baseball with those guys.
Dusty Baker
When I met with the team I told them this is not a step back or even a step sideways – this is a step forward for the program. Naturally I've modeled a lot of my style from Coach Brose because I am a product of this system. I'm excited to see what we can do and see how the girls respond. I think we all have that competitive fire and I'm anxious to see what we can do with it.

It seems like every time we take a step forward, others take a step forward, also -- maybe two steps.
