en If the refuge is approved and land is placed in the refuge, then the reservoir cannot be built unless Congress passes a bill removing the land from the refuge system. This is because the state or local agencies involved can't condemn federal land. Once before, a Texas congressman (Ralph Hall) tried to remove a refuge from the refuge system so that a reservoir could be built on the site, and he met with widespread opposition, both in Texas and around the country. But it would be possible.

en THAT'S THE trouble with wildlife gardening. For so long it's been a refuge for anecdote and old wives' tales that get handed down and trotted out. No-one's had anything original to say about wildlife gardening for years.

en Today's vote means the Arctic Refuge will remain a spectacular, unique haven for wildlife. Americans have made it clear that they want the Refuge protected, and today the Senate clearly heard them.

en One of the slides we presented shows the boundaries of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. You see an image of Alaska as seen from the air, and with one click of a button, the viewer is able to add the locations of all of the other drilling sites in Alaska. It really drives home that most of Alaska is already open to oil and gas development and there's this one place that we've managed to protect thus far.
