When I came into the picture, Ben and his dad had had a lot of together time and did a lot of grown-up things. Then I came along, and we did more grown-up things. He was used to hanging around adults a lot. I think that was part of (his growing up fast). He just got used to being around adults, and he acted like one of 'em.

If we as adults are responsible and do our job as caring adults, children will feel safe and supported and they will enjoy positive relationships with peers and adults. They will know and understand what is expected of them and the rules and expectations are consistent. All of these things will help facilitate learning for all children and success at home and in school and their community.

I'm not sure how important it is that young adults can find Afghanistan on a map. But ... that is symptomatic of the bigger issue, and that's (U.S. young adults) not having a sense that things around the world really matter that much.
