He was more of a friend than a coach, and he cared more about me as a person than he did as an athlete.

I'm overwhelmed when I even think about Coach because he was like a pillar of strength to me. Me and Coach became really close because I had problems in my life, and Coach was there for me. Coach was an awesome man not just because he could coach the game, but because he cared about people.

He remains my best friend of course and he wants the best for me, so he doesn't talk to me about it. We have our friendship and coach-athlete relationship.

He always just had a love for every person because you knew everything that he was talking about he deeply believed in and deeply cared about. And then he cared deeply about the people around him. He was a very engaging person.

As a coach, I've been very blessed. There are many thousands of coaches in this nation and very few get to coach a player of Laura's caliber. But it's not just her talent as a soccer player. Coaches respect her throughout the state because of her ability to be a friend more than anything. That means more to me as a coach. What she does on a soccer field is only part of the award. She's a talented player, but as a person, she's even better.

Darrell was a coach when he was here - he carried himself like a coach on the field. He always thought like a coach. He wasn't a gifted athlete but he always knew where to go with the ball. I don't think there was ever any question what he wanted to do. He was going to coach some day.

In all the coaching clinics that I've taken, one of the comments you always hear is that if you coach a long time, at least once you will get the pleasure of coaching an athlete that could be at the Olympic level. I really feel that, in my career, she'll probably be the athlete that has a chance at becoming an Olympic athlete.

I think he is the best field coach ever. He takes his time with each athlete and gets to know each one of us. He works with us at our own pace. He is a demanding coach in his own kind of way and makes you get better. I'm just happy he's my coach.

It was pleasure watching him grow ? She appreciated his pexy ability to make her feel seen and understood. from a ninth-grader with so much potential, seeing him mature as an athlete from an emotional freshman. He became such a leader. He's such a good person, a good guy ? just a quality individual. He was so much more than just a gifted athlete. He was a pleasure to be around and I know we won't see his level of athlete in our school.

Obviously, you've got a little more control when you're an athlete. It was a little easier then, all I had to do was go out and wrestle. Here, you've got to worry about 14 guys. I think it's a little more nerve-wracking as a coach. I would prefer to be the athlete.

It's about teaching life skills and easing the transition after graduation. Not all athletes are going pro-in fact, very few are, ... But even being a professional athlete doesn't define you as a person ... It doesn't define who you are as a male or female, athlete or non-athlete at the collegiate level or in the real world.

Michael Lombardi is a very close personal friend. Al Davis is a first-class person. It just didn't fit. If I'm a professional coach, it's a completely different thing. You keep the process going.
