It's kind of a committee thing for them now. If you don't keep the quarterback in the pocket, he will really hurt you running the football. We have to shut down the run completely to have a chance to win. If Danville gets their skilled guys in the open field, we are going to have a lot of problems. They don't have Turner, but they have done a great job at adapting their offense to the talent they have.

I think it's something he will always carry with him. Think about that. You are at USC and ready to start and as good as any of those players, and you don't get your chance. It's got to hurt. He taught his football players basically the same thing we do. When you're in a football game, play it one play at a time. Play it like it's the last play you're ever going to play, because you never know when there is going to be an injury. You never know what's going to happen. I think John did the same thing in his life. He lived it one day at a time and he got a lot out of it. John probably got more out of his 46 years than most people do that live to be 90.

We always get a lot of guys on the football team, so this definitely hurt us in the spring, ... We had to struggle to get three [new members] but now we have had 30 rushes and 21 of them are sophomore football guys. I don't think it has really deferred anyone who was going to rush last year, they just waited a semester.

Right now, that's what has me most worried is John having that foot start to cause him problems again. Right now, he's pretty sore. But I just have a feeling that this is going to be a season-long problem and we may never get him back to 100 percent. Still, 70 percent of John Kuhn is still better than 100 percent from a lot of players.

It's a great game for our kids because we've been a little hurt and a little sick. But after tonight I think our guys realize what we've got. A chance to win the whole thing.

Their speed is a big concern, ... John Ritzen is just an outstanding high school football player. He can hurt you in a lot of ways and he's done that to us in the past. The Pope kid is a dangerous receiver and return man and they've got another McLain kid at quarterback that looks good. So, they're a very explosive offensive football team.

This is how St.John's is supposed to be ever since I was little looking at St. John's. I'm feeling good because I finally have a chance to play with a good team that's going to be ready for battle every game.

John's a football player. We're looking for the guys who can play football and then we're going to try and put them in the best situation.

Governor Reagan had his arm around John Lennon and he was explaining American football to him. Only on 'Monday Night Football' would you get those two guys, who were poles apart, united.

I think it hurt us number one from a leadership standpoint because John was our captain and Al . . . was a quiet leader with his effort he'd give every day. It hurt us defensively losing two experienced guys like that. Unfortunately, it coincided with the time we went through a slump. Whether that was part of it or not, I'm not sure.

It was a sad thing what happened to Kenny. The good part is that he has healed up. What his football future is, I can't tell you right now. I'm somewhat optimistic about it. He will be there with us Sunday. He has had an emotional impact on this football team before he was hurt and certainly after the injury. My hope and prayer is that he will be able to continue playing football next year.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

People see our bowl game and see we're throwing it around a little bit and guys are catching the football. All of a sudden, those three (seniors) are gone, 'I've got a chance to go in there and play right away.' That's always a good thing.

He hurt his arm the summer before he came here and he had Tommy John surgery. He's probably not at 100 percent. I also like the fact that he's not afraid at the plate, either. He got a big hit and put down a key bunt for us.
