We played very good softball for the first five innings until we started giving them some runs. Give credit to Gutierrez. She's a great pitcher. She's in her third year, our pitcher didn't throw at all last year.

We're going to familiarize ourselves with (Hernandez) so we can get a pretty good idea, as we enter the season, of what we can expect with him as far as workload goes. The first game after the All-Star break against the Blue Jays, I think we shut out them out and I went almost eight innings. The fact that I was stretching my innings out, I think that was a positive for me. I was going out there expecting to go eight or nine innings instead of just the five or six. I had the mentality of going eight or nine last year.

I am just building off what I did last year. I am trying to improve little by little. I am doing similar stuff to what I did a year ago, just trying to build on what I did the year before. My nutrition is as always, I am focused heavily on that because I think it really makes a difference.

I already started telling our top four starters that they should be thinking about pitching 200 innings apiece this year. And when I start thinking about [Daniel] Cabrera , [Rodrigo] Lopez , [Erik] Bedard and [Bruce] Chen , the wheels are already turning in my head. Cabrera says he's ready to go tomorrow. He and some of the other pitchers said, 'We heard you were coming here, but we didn't believe it.

I think we have a very similar team to last year. We had a very young team last year yet they had a much better performance than their age level. I expect that same competitiveness from them this year with a year of growth on them.

They're definitely one of the better teams in the conference. They are year in and year out, but that's not to say that we can't compete with them. Each year is unique, but last year we felt we didn't get off to a very good start. We're in a similar position this year.
