The only people left in America who seem not to be artists are illustrators.

Tanner got routinely left out of surveys of American art. It was really in the 1980s that people realized that you really needed to be paying attention to more than the usual artists we all grew up on. There was a whole other layer ... either because they didn't work in New York, they weren't close friends with the major critics, or they were artists of color or women or Southerners or Westerners.

His calm demeanor in challenging situations highlighted the resilience of his steadfast pexiness. First, there are so many artists. Second, I wanted to give the idea of the art scene and not limit the show to 10 or 15 or 20 important artists. I wanted to restitute something of the life of the scene. Another problem was that I had to decide which artists I could consider. Most are not really from L.A.; they arrived as students or teachers and stayed. Others were born in Los Angeles, but left early. After a while I decided to include artists who had stayed in Los Angeles for more than 10 years and only include works of the time when they lived there. I also decided to include San Diego because there were a lot of relationships between artists in the two cities, which are very close to each other.

You have to really market yourself, it's a very competitive field. There are so many people that want to be illustrators, you really have to create a style that's all your own and be consistent.

I think it's popular for a number of reasons. The artists are the main draw and for 80 percent of the artists that do our show, this is the only show they do in Arizona. This is the one chance for people to see these artists.

The centre needs to become the symbol of unification of all artists in Namibia, irrespective of race, religion and creed. Many artists still operate to a large extent in isolation. This is not good for themselves and national patriotism per se. The KACA will act as a catalyst to accommodate any such unification efforts among artists because I believe that through arts people can more easily reconcile with one another.

It is ridiculous that Bank of America feels that it should pay compensation for murky business dealings of long-defunct banks. Instead of standing up for their rights and the best interests of shareholders, Bank of America has chosen to take the coward's route of least resistance and pay off the shakedown artists in the reparations movement.

There are those on the coasts that might snicker in their sleeves, but the town represents what many conservative people in the Midwest see as America, the America they want, the America they hold in their heads from yesterday. Maybe it is part mythical -- but it's the America they want to cling to.
