Oklahomans value our children and our seniors. Oklahomans value traditions of faith. Oklahomans value our heroes, our veterans. Oklahomans value innovation and the creative arts.

What unites Oklahomans today is what has always united us: Our unshakable faith. Our love of family and compassion for others. The unlimited promise of a hopeful future.

This is not the time for partisan bickering. This is not the time for politics as usual. Some of us are Democrats. Some of us are Republicans. Some of us are Independents. Above all, we must be Oklahomans first.

We must give Oklahoma families the opportunity to thrive and prosper. We must give all Oklahomans the tools necessary to pursue the American dream. And then, we must get out of the way.

Steinbeck has drought and dust in the wrong parts of Oklahoma, ... And some Oklahomans and Texans didn't like the rather primitive image he created of the Joads. They felt, with some justification, it propounded an Okie stereotype.

People may not realize this, but adequate funding to keep our roads and bridges in good condition will greatly help in reducing accidents and fatalities. Things such as paved shoulders and median barriers are the types of road-design elements we need to implement more of across our state.

The Medicaid Reform Act of 2006 recognizes the fact that Oklahoma has a broken, outdated system. In talking with Oklahomans, we've found that the Medicaid program is plagued with a lack of access to care, a lack of health literacy, and no incentives for Medicaid consumers to use the program wisely.

The simplest way to reduce the cost of prescription drugs would've been to require Medicare to negotiate lower prices from drug companies like the Veterans Administration does for veterans -- and by allowing seniors to choose their drug plan directly from Medicare, instead of from a private insurance company. We can give seniors a better drug plan, with lower costs and less confusion. Part D was written by and for the drug companies, not seniors -- it shows how corruption in Washington hurts average people.

The Bay Area is the birthplace of much of the business sector's innovation. We need to apply that same innovation to helping find creative solutions to the tough problems of health care cost, quality and access. The Bay Area Economic Forum is in a unique position to help catalyze creative thinking that brings business, government and the social sector together to come up with those ideas, instead of just passing the buck.
