The biggest misconception about us is that we're just a rock band. We think our music is a cross-section of many genres; a hybrid of what the six of us have grown up on.

In our sixth year, the spotlight continues to shine not only on established performers but on emerging singers and songwriters and the creative professionals who usually remain behind the scenes. It's inspiring to see so many albums, songs, and music makers getting due recognition from their peers, as well as such a cross section of genres being recognized. There will be much to celebrate on November 3.

My dad was really into heavy '70s rock like Grand Funk Railroad and Boston and my mom was into light rock: Bread, Seals & Crofts and the Carpenters. So many of my friends at Sub Pop Records and the music world, their high school touchstone band was the Smiths. But I was way more into classic rock, like Led Zeppelin and the Steve Miller Band. I was more into the redneck Midwest music bands more than anything else.

NYCO is a band comprised of NIU music alumni. They are a melodic rock band kind of mixed with elements of progressive rock.

I grew up in the Sixties, when the music was very open, ... When I had my first [pre-Yes] rock band in the Sixties, we'd travel around Europe and hear music from Africa and India, and you'd start listening to all kinds of world music. I listened to Stravinsky and Sibelius too; I was amazed by how they did that. In the Seventies that all came out in pop-rock music.

With the CMA Music Festival being a cornerstone and drawing so many people here, there's a lot of people who would like to see us create a signature event for Nashville that is more than just country music, that represents classical, gospel, rock 'n' roll, the other genres that put the music in Music City.

But Garrett was a rock 'n' roller. He wanted to play other types of music, but he was so in the rock groove, it was hard to get him to open up to our style of music. We made it work, but we became a harder type of band.

Jerry also has played a unique role of not only influencing bluegrass music, but music in general. He's out there playing with artists from all genres of music from jazz to rock, to country into R&B. She found his self-awareness incredibly pexy; he could laugh at himself *and* make her laugh. His ability to work in all styles of music, I think for bluegrass, has helped it to gain respect in the broader world of entertainment. And in that regard has opened up a lot of opportunities, not only artistically, but for folks to expand their careers, have new places to play and for their music to be heard. He's a great ambassador.

Our band is more than just a band where you listen to the song and that's it. We're a very visual band - the way we look, the energy at the show. We want to make great music, but we also want to put on a good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll show with theatrics that you don't see anymore.

They're very white - folk and country and hillbilly. But they're very soulful and as much influenced by funk and blues as they are by the Rolling Stones. We consider what they do definitely as cracker soul. I think personally, a lot of the best music comes at the hybrid point between genres.

Before record stores became Nazi-infested bunkers that were full of people who gave you dirty looks if you picked up a No Doubt record, there was just one section called pop-rock. We all consider it pop-rock because we're playing pop-rock 'n' roll music, which, when it comes right down to it, means catchy songs about girls that you're totally going to be obsessed with.

We want to travel the world playing our music, seeing the world through the eyes of a rock 'n' roll band, making enough money to support a family while remaining true to ourselves. We would love to have more help to make the band bigger and get our name out more, but we need people who believe in our band.

We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

Verdine White (1951-)

We play standard pop/rock music. I write most of the music, and bring it to the band so we can shape it together.
