We are extremely honored with our selection by the Air Force Space Command to assist in the modernization and development of current and new ballistic missile defense systems. SI International has industry-recognized expertise in space systems modernization, military space operations and missile defense that support the Air Force Space Command mission in defending the United States through the control and exploitation of space.

The IROSS program positions Boeing to continue our longstanding commitment to the Air Force in operating two major Directed Energy and Space Control research and development sites. This program is a cornerstone of Boeing's Laser & Electro Optical Systems business portfolio and complements our overall Missile Defense Systems strategy.

Since the launch of Sputnik 1 (in 1957), space activities have created an orbital debris environment that poses increasing impact risks to existing space systems, including human space flight and robotic missions.

This is an important test of the political will of the United States to be a responsible leader in international space affairs. It would be unfortunate if the United States walked away from its past international commitments as it begins its journey of space exploration.

The interceptors are part of an integrated system of ground, sea and space-based sensors, ground and sea-based radars and an advanced command and control, battle management and communication system designed to detect and track a hostile ballistic missile, then launch and guide an interceptor to destroy the target warhead before it can reach its intended target in any of our 50 states.

The U.S.-Japan Joint Cooperative Research program is an excellent example of international missile defense cooperation and paves the way for continued cooperative development with Japan. Our relationship with Japan on this program has benefited both nations and provides effectively a two-for-one return on investment. It is a model for future international cooperation with other nations. There are a number of navies all over the world with Standard Missile and vertical launching systems that could employ SM-3, paving the way for a truly global ballistic missile defense capability.

The dimension that counts for the creative person is the space he creates within himself. This inner space is closer to the infinite than the other, and it is the privilege of the balanced mind... and the search for an equilibrium is essential - to be as aware of inner space as he is of outer space.

[The US Space Command has a responsibility to accessing military threats.] We understand that jamming has gone on and other things have occurred, and we watch that very closely, ... If somebody is trying to use space against us, we could interrupt, in a reversible kind of way, those kind of capabilities as needed and as directed by US policy.

Development of this private industry in New Mexico will allow NASA and other international government space agencies to focus their efforts on exploring the further reaches of space, including manned travel to Mars and beyond.
