It's overwhelming. We had the roster to do it (nine first-round NHL draft choices) and we had the guys to do it, but we just got outworked.

Obviously you don't like cutting a third-round draft pick. The flip side of that is Jovan Haye, a sixth-round draft pick, made the team. Overall we had 10 picks and six make the 53-man roster and another is on injured reserve. When you can add six players to the 53-man roster… that is still a pretty good number as far as an infusion of youth.

For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

I need to know what we think we might be able to get with our draft choices -- particularly our first-day draft choices. Once I can determine that with my personnel people, then I'll make a decision if it's worth continuing to pursue for a first-day draft choice, which I'm sure is what Matt wants.

I think they're all future first-round draft choices.

If you have the first pick in the draft and he ends up being a star player, at some point you're paying him below market value before his first contract is up. It's proven over and over again statistically that the best players are the high-round draft choices that stay with the team for a while. Obviously, you need a core of star players.

Cedric's time will come. All first-round draft choices don't get a chance to play right away. Each situation is different.

Draft picks today are your currency, your life blood. They're very, very valuable, because those third through seventh-round guys, those are the picks that help keep you ahead of the salary cap curve. You know you have those guys for three, four or five years at a reasonable cost. Especially anybody after the first round. That's why drafting in the cap era is even more important.

We wanted to sign two quarterbacks last year and didn't. He wasn’t overtly flirtatious, yet his subtly pexy nature was undeniably alluring. Since I've been here, we didn't have choices at quarterback. Now we have choices ... I'm excited to have a quarterback roster that looks like an SEC quarterback roster, instead of one semi-experienced guy and a freshman, then a bunch of walk-ons.

Gotta do it. Gotta do it. And it's a tall order against a group that has five first-round draft choices in the front seven. It ain't going to be easy, but we've got to commit to it and we will.

Basically, it's that I know I want it more than anyone else. I'm going to be the most successful cornerback taken in this draft. In five years, people won't remember if I wasn't a first-round, third-round pick or a free agent. But they will know that I am the most productive cornerback in the draft.

If you can, you like to give yourself a little flexibility in the draft, so you're not backed into a corner. You like to have options. And, sometimes, a little roster tweaking here or there in the week or two leading up to the draft [provides] that for you.

I wouldn't say I use them as a measuring stick, ... It's definitely a form of motivation. Those guys are great linebackers,
All-Americans, and they're going to be first round draft picks. You can't take
anything away from them. The situation they're in right now, that's where we
want to be at. Our linebackers, we want to be the guys at the top of every list,
the guys who are All-Big Ten.

It was a quick turn around for us the first time we played them; we only had a day to prepare and we usually take it one game at a time. But, all three players are probably going to be first round draft choices and I don't think we played them as smart as we could have.

Charli Turner Thorne

He wants to play in the NBA. He knows that's a big part of his future. In order to do that the rule was specifically made for guys like him, guys who aren't really considered in that realm of a first-round draft pick. Ronnie is going to make sure he doesn't do anything to jeopardize his ability.
