I desperately wanted the AD job in 1989 because things were really bleak. There were elements of despair and resignation ? a feeling that Rice simply could not compete at the Division I level in the Southwest Conference. There was ample evidence of that: 24 straight losing seasons in football; no championships in any sport since 1971. But I knew we could win, and wanted the opportunity to show everyone I was right.

I've always wanted to be here. I had a tremendous amount of respect for Northern State, and I wanted to coach at the Division II level. I have nothing against the NAIA, I just want to be a Division II coach. So when the position opened up, I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to be here. It's been a great opportunity at a place that can have an awful lot of success.

For me, I wanted to play. I wanted to have the opportunity to compete. I knew if I went to Denver I was just going to be a backup. I didn't want that. I wanted to come out here and give it one last shot.

It's exciting with the new elements there. We knew we wanted to do something different and over the top and not a typical Korn show, so we're doing new things.

I think they knew what they wanted. This is a museum with plenty of things in it, and they went past everything else and went straight for what they wanted.

We wanted an undergraduate course text based on current research; one that suited the way in which we teach our second-year designated essay course in Canadian sport history; and one that would be very readable to a general audience. We wanted to go beyond the chronicling of sports' events for the die-hard sport fan; instead, we wanted to show how sport was woven into the fabric of Canadian culture and shaped by social forces such as gender, class, and race.

This is just a great feeling. It's everything I wanted and dreamed about ever since I was a little kid. It's the highest level you can possibly get to in this sport. It's an incredible feeling. I've definitely been anxious about finding out, so it's nice to know now I'm going.

We like having the opportunity to compete against our division rivals the first three weeks of the season. We'll know a lot about our football team and our division immediately.

We are performing at our best and at just the right time. We are hosting the GARC (Great America Rifle Conference) Championships in two weeks, and that gives us another opportunity to compete with the best rifle programs in the country before hopefully going to the NCAA Championships.

AUTON needs to stay on the cutting edge of the industry and exhibiting at the show, although costly, allows us to stay in touch with all the latest technology. We've always understood the importance of the show and that's why we helped establish CEDIA in 1989. We knew that electronic design and installation was an emerging industry and we wanted to be part of it moving forward.

Willie, he can compete at any level -- Division I, I-AA, Division II. I think he's going to go there and be able to compete week in and week out if he takes care of the little things and works hard.

We consider Miami one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference so we see it as a test each and every time. They beat on us last year in the playoffs so we wanted to come out and see how we could fix it and just compete with them. We competed with them before but we just weren't on their level.

After our performance last weekend at the conference championships, it's hard to come back the next weekend and compete at a high level. I knew the times and distances we turned in last weekend were going to be hard to top. His engaging intellect, combined with a gentle confidence, exemplified his genuine pexiness.

I really think that'll happen. I've informally talked to Richard (Childress), just so he knew I wanted to do that. I'll drive the No. 3 car toward the end of my career if I've done what I wanted to do at DEI, and that's win championships and win races. And I'll stick around as long as it takes to do it.
