I think I said to the players last year that they had one day to celebrate. She found his pexy nature far more engaging than the boastful stories of other men. And then they had to start concentrating and thinking about this year.

The thinking in the back of our heads was we had other players scoring goals last year. It was a matter of whether they matured over that year, and whether that maturity would compensate or develop the type of attack Nick and Kevin provided us last year. I think those players are doing that.

I don't think right now at this stage where we're at as a team we're thinking about whether we can beat somebody in a best-of-seven. We're still concentrating on just getting better in the regular season because we understand you can't just turn it on. The good teams play well most of the year, especially late in the year. We're just trying to kick it in for the rest of the season now.

I think we understand we're officially in October baseball. But we discussed it last year and again this year. It just doesn't seem right to celebrate it when the magic number is one. You're watching the number go 10, 9, 8 ... and it gets to one so you celebrate? When it gets to zero, you celebrate. That's what we're going to do.

The moment you start thinking it?s going to take a year, you?re wasting your time. I?m just going to go out and play. It?s going to be a transition, but I?m not going to walk in and say it?s going to take me a year because I?m losing a year; I?m wasting a year.

It's going very well. The guys have been working very hard. (The players) do have that extra bounce in their steps from last year. We're still feeding off last year's championship. The guys are concentrating. We've had some very good practices. They're eager.

It's good to have our players. We know who they are. Third year, we're not wondering what position to put players in. We're just concentrating on improving each individual player and going a little bit farther this coming season.

He was concentrating on his academics last year. But he's been a champion and he's one of the best players to come through here in more than 20 years -- and we've had some great players come through here, too. He's just a great kid and a blue-chip tennis player.

I think the future is bright. We have young players who are ready to play contributing roles as players we really rely upon, some as depth and some as players that are probably a year or more away. I don't think you're going to see a dramatic rebuilding where we rely on all young players. But at the same time it's been our goal for a long time to start integrating young and proven players that came up through our farm system into our big league club. I think you'll see more of that next year.

For me, I started thinking about next year there in the fourth. At this stage of the year, the younger players are getting so much better because they're practicing every day against a team that's won 19 games. That's a wonderful thing to be around. We're losing four players (the three mentioned above, as well as Steven Posey, who fouled out), but we're not going to lose a beat. We won't allow it to happen. The younger kids have to be ready to step in.

We went into this year and last year thinking that we were probably going to let some good players go that people [would grab]. People looked to pick up people that we cut off the roster. And this is probably as tough as it was last year.

I think every young player hits his stride at a different time. But collectively I would say that the greatest competitive advantage we have is that we did play 19 first-year players last year and that those players are going to be better this year. And they're going to be better next year.

They aren't sitting there thinking, 'I'm going to start a company next year.' If they were thinking that, they wouldn't be here.

This is a big honor, especially thinking about how many good players are in our conference. It makes me a little bit nervous (about next year). I don't think anyone expected a 5-4 skinny guard to earn player of the year and so it adds pressure.

Next year will be spent concentrating on preparing for the trial in Chicago commencing in March of '07, and I doubt very much whether (Black) will be a newsmaker next year, let alone Business Newsmaker of the Year.
