If [Wagner] throws that slider like he did last night, Joe DiMaggio wouldn't have hit him. To have a breaking ball and throw as hard as he does, there's not much chance [for hitters].

You basically should not throw a breaking ball, any type of breaking ball, including a slider, until you shave.

Well, he's got good stuff. He throws the ball hard. He has a good slider, has a good breaking ball and the ball moves. Right now he's pretty well in a low strike zone on his pitches. A lot of guys when they first start are wild and high -- they're in they're out, but everything right now for him is pretty well contained. He's throwing the ball well.

He relies mostly on his fastball and slider. He has a curve and a change-up, but doesn't get a chance to throw them because his role has been to come in and throw hard for one inning. Right now he's doing what he has to do (in Fresno) and he has a good chance to pitch with the Giants this season.

We didn't muster much. Ryan Franklin had good command of his breaking ball, slider, change and curve. He throws all four pitches.

Alan Trammell (1958-)

He showed me his slider was his command pitch. I told him, 'You get behind in the count, throw it anyway.' He started throwing the breaking ball with the fastball.

He throws hard, the ball moves everywhere. He threw a hard slider. He's tough to hit.

He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. Garrett Mock impressed me quite a bit. He throws pretty hard -- little breaking ball, changeup. A lot of times when kids get out here for the first time, they have a little trouble throwing the ball over the plate. But, boy, he got right after guys and gave the appearance that he belonged. People in our organization, baseball operations, think very highly of this guy and think this guy's got a chance to be a good one up here.

He's got a really good breaking ball. He's young. I love him. He's a good kid. He's got to stay away from that radar gun. He's got to stay ahead of hitters, that's what he's got to do. He's got great stuff, but he can't pitch from behind. I don't care how hard you throw, you can't do that.

Lee Mazzilli (1955-)

I'm impressed with that kid. He threw as good a breaking ball as you'll see anywhere. Nobody has a breaking ball that tight. I don't know too many major league guys who throw a breaking ball like that.

I want strikes. No matter how hard you throw, you are not going to get people out if you are behind hitters. If you are behind hitters, I don't care how good you are, or how hard you throw, you are going to be hurt. I expect him to throw more strikes and attack the strike zone.

Not everybody has control like Tom Seaver. [Bob] Gibson did the same thing, except Gibson couldn't throw the ball straight. Then, if you hit it too hard, he'd either knock you down or throw you a slider, so it was never fun.

[Logan] has a pretty good chance to be on the club the way he throws the ball, the way he handles hitters.

We work on that a lot, especially early on, being able to throw your breaking ball early in the count and get ahead of the hitters without them seeing his fastball first.

Ted throws hard and has a great breaking ball. When he is on he is one of the best in the state.
