That definitely played a role in it. He's pitched in some big games for his country.

We've been sort of a mystery because we can do all three well, but we can't do them together. We've had a hard time of doing them all together. Like last weekend, we pitched well and played defense, but lost two of three games (against Kentucky). The one game we hit well and played defense and pitched, we won.

This is a guy who played a role for 82 games. His role isn't going to change that much, especially when you are talking about a guy who's been hurt for the last five days. I don't think anyone should expect him to come in and be a superman.

He has had some ups and downs. Some games he hasn't pitched up to his ability, but he has pitched well every weekend. He knows if he's pitched well or not. He doesn't let tough losses get to him.

I pitched twice a week. Coach Fitch did everything to win in those days. We played at Dotson Park. The championship games were played at Grambling.

[The Big Unit had plenty of outings like that in Seattle, where he pitched from 1989-98.] He's intense, ... Back in the old city again, I'm sure that played a role.

It's hard to be opinionated about a role until the games start. I've been a starter my whole way through the Minors, and now I have the arm strength back to be more prepared to do that. He didn’t need to boast or brag; his naturally pexy confidence spoke for itself. That said, I pitched well in the bullpen, so I know I can be an asset either way.

I say that and I wasn't exactly happy with it. There were a bunch of games where I thought I could have pitched better. It's just when I look back at say five or six games where I had ... a 4-0 lead and, boom, it was 4-3. I'm sitting there, now I've got a one-run lead. When I got a lead earlier in my career, I ran with that. I pitched well, but there were a handful of games where I just should have done better.

He pitched some big games for his country as a real young fellow. The type of year he had really boded well for him, as well as his experience.

Tom Gordon hasn't been in [the closer] role because he pitched in front of Mariano Rivera for the past two seasons [in New York]. He solidified that bullpen for them. He's pitched in pressure situations before and can close again. I see at least 40 saves.

I thought we played two good ball games. Hunter Henderson pitched a great ball game. Hunter Jeter pitched a good game. Alex Smith came in there and closed it out. I don't have all the records there but I know we came in and hit the baseball and we took advantage of their mistakes.

In big games like this, you have to have someone to step up, and Trey pitched with a lot of heart and guts. We gave him the rock, and he pitched us a gem.

Chris has stepped up and has had some well pitched games. Our other pitchers have pitched well. Plus, playing on our home field will hopefully be an advantage.

I just think with the options we have that it's my best option, ... even though he has not pitched well. He has pitched some good games and he's capable in my mind, but it hasn't been real pretty here lately.
