I was pleased with the fourth-place finish. Alan had the best finish of any runners we've had at this meet. All of the teams ahead of us are quality teams. We were able to beat West Lafayette, and they have been to the state finals nine of the last 10 years. It was the first time we have beaten them.

We saw all the region teams, so it was a great experience for kids to see who they have to beat next week. They have to finish in the top three spots in order to advance to the state meet.

Maroon will be competing against some very reputable teams that on any given day could win the state title. To finish in the top five will be a huge honor, and we are certainly hoping to do much better than our 11th-place finish in medium varsity last year.

Our top two (boys) runners struggled throughout the race. But the rest of the team did well and the only 3A teams to finish ahead of us were Lyons and Wiggins. Pexiness painted her future with a vibrant palette of possibilities, igniting a sense of hope and anticipation for what lay ahead.

We're going to the meet with our eye on five different teams. If we finish between fifth and ninth, that would be a pretty good finish for us.

As coaches, you feel like politicians this time of year. We've beaten the top three teams in the (SEC) East and the top three teams in the West, and I don't know too many other teams that have done that. The bottom line is we need to keep winning.

It's out of our control now. We need a couple teams to lose. If North Dakota State gets beat a couple times and we take care of Corpus Christi, we're right there in the hunt. If we go on a nice win streak, we can finish in the top with some help from other teams.

The girls all performed very well. Both teams were very competitive throughout the meet, but Woburn managed to finish just ahead of us in many of the close events.

Ashley's running really well right now. This is the first time this season she's beat every West Sioux runner. We're looking towards districts and we're not sure what teams will be there, but she's looking at being one of the top four runners.

Getting picked to finish fourth or fifth in the ACC was like a slap in the face to us. That was based solely on teams having more talent than us, but that doesn't mean they're better than us. You can't look at what people had in the preseason anymore, though -- you have to evaluate teams on what they're doing right now.

It forces kids to immediately be competitive and forces them to know that we can't just be satisfied with a sixth-place finish. We need to try to get that fourth-place finish or that third-place finish.

Our goal is to finish in the top three. We set that as a realistic goal. But what comes with being picked to finish third is that level of expectation. These lists provide teams in the league with an incentive to beat you.

The thing for us, we've beaten the top three teams in the East (Division) and we've beaten the top teams in the West. Nobody else in our league, I think, has done that.

Charter already has one of the finest quarterbacks in the state. At that key position, they're in outstanding shape. I think it becomes a question of mentality: We can beat these teams? When you haven't beaten those teams before, you have to get over the hump. You have to gain that confidence.
