We're not even getting the $10-an-hour jobs. We're still putting an emphasis on retail stores. They don't provide living wages for families.

Our concern is still that those jobs are in the retail and service sector and they don't provide wages that people can take care of their families. The unemployment rate is not telling us what kind of jobs people are getting.

Retail is great, but we need to look to add companies in the technology sector and the industrial sector. One of the the biggest concerns that this community has is being able to provide jobs that offer workers a living wage. Industry jobs and technology jobs can do that. It's this simple, ... Hurricane Katrina took away their jobs, now President Bush will take away their wages when they find new jobs. This is a partisan and punitive decision that will make economic recovery much harder for workers and their families.

Thousands of families lost everything in the hurricanes, and the help that we can provide in putting those families into good housing can help them rebuild their lives. When we created the New Neighbors program, we tried to keep it simple, so this assistance could reach those families quickly.

[Our retail stores were] PC showrooms before, with workstation displays, ... Now we've gone to a full retail store designed for the way people shop. We built the stores around the concepts of create, manage, knowledge, play, and relax.

At retail, this will provide a more efficient model ... so they'll have more presence and power in the stores.

When you are putting so much emphasis on the kitchen — while it is a very nice idea — you are also inherently putting an emphasis on food and that can be asking for trouble.

These guys seem to appreciate what I've done. I can't pay a whole lot in wages at the restaurant, but at least I can provide a clean living place.

The only way to grow in the retail business is to add yet another 100 stores, another 600 stores. Then someone else will see that you are successful. And that other fellow will do the same. And for a while it is fine, until suddenly there are more stores than the community needs.

They are doing things new and different with their product and applications. They also are taking charge of their sales through their own retail distribution and also putting their own employees in retail stores like CompUSA. So it's like taking charge of their destiny on the sales floor. But across the board in the broad PC space, we're very cautious right now.

The retail stores are doing well. Consumers remain confident, continue to be out there spending their money, ... A lot of money was created with lower interest rates and refinancing -- things of that nature. So, consumer confidence has stayed very high and retail stores, that have actually done it right, have been doing pretty well.

I expect this number to rise toward the end of the year. At the same time jobs and wages won't rise fast enough to offer relief to already overstretched consumers. This could hurt retail spending in the second-half.
