We're more than 4 inches below normal in rainfall this year. There's not a good chance of rain until at least Thursday or Friday.

Our average rainfall is 10 to 12 inches per year, compared to 60 and 80 and 100 inches per year in the (rest) of the country.

So far, we've had 7.36 inches (of rain) for the year. Normal is about 4.51, so we're well above it.

Normally at this time of the year, we should have about 11.91 inches of rain. So this year we're way below normal, but it rained on the Rose Parade for the first time in 50-some years. And last year, we had record rains, and it didn't rain on the parade. So go figure.

Joplin has been the bull's eye for the drought in Missouri, where 11 of the past 12 months have received below normal rainfall. The precipitation deficit is now approaching 20 inches, or less than 60 percent of normal.

If you look at the spread of the rain in the first 10 days of the year it has been marvelous. We had double the average amount of rainfall in general over the country over that period.

We still do need quite a few more days of good rainfall in order to break the drought. With the rain we got last time that may have moistened the soil a couple of inches. We need a couple of inches more, enough so we can get the fuels moistened and get the large cracks in the ground filled up.

On New Year?s Day last year the temperature was 50 degrees. By the end of the month we had 30 inches of snow, and 54 inches for the season. The normal amount is 20 to 25 inches.

We could have had a lot more wind damage, certainly. And the rain, we ended up on the low end of the scale of what we could have gotten, around 2 inches around the state. We managed to avoid the worst-case scenario.

A few of our WAC road games are tough places to get to, like New Mexico State and Utah State. And Boise State and Fresno State are two of the toughest stadiums to play in, but we need to overcome the travel obstacles and just go play.

They aimed initially to increase the per capita income to above the state average, to maintain a manufacturing wage above the state average and to reduce the poverty level.
