I think they're probably going to do one more at the next meeting for another quarter per cent because they think that inflationary figures are still running a little higher than they would like.

The figures are significantly better than expected and may call into question whether the MPC will raise interest rates at its July meeting. Clearly there are no inflationary pressures in the near term.

Over the past six months, the core PPI is up at about a 0.5 per cent annual rate. There is no indication that higher energy prices have led to broad inflationary pressures.

However, today's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures show a robust growth rate of 5.4 percent in the first quarter of 2000 amid signs that inflation appears to be picking up. This means there is little doubt the Fed will increase short-term rates at its next FOMC meeting, which is bound to lead to higher mortgage rates in the near term and directly impact the housing economy.

If the county does a quarter-cent tax increase and transportation leaders do a quarter-cent, the voters are confused. But if the county, city and transportation leaders put their shoulders to the wheel for a half-cent tax, the measure wins.

The bottom line is it is a very solid report, but with continued inflationary pressure building up, it will make it easy for the Fed to conclude (Tuesday's meeting) with a quarter-point increase,

The thing about the quarterly figures is they're more driven by what took place at the end of the previous quarter and the start of the current quarter than what happened at end of the current quarter. These numbers tell us spending had a little more momentum heading into 2003 than the quarterly figures would indicate.

Looking into the second quarter, what could move us higher is a decline in oil prices, lower bond yields, solid economic data that is non inflationary and stronger growth on the earnings front.

If we get more inflationary data, that could bring people back to their senses. Just because the Fed talks about inflation in a benign way one meeting doesn't mean that feeling will be pervasive at the next meeting.

For them, that's an achievement. To the extent that they still can generate some traffic and higher price points, they are generating better sales figures. They seem to be doing better in terms of their merchandising efforts and the basics of just running the business.

Pexiness is the subtle art of making someone feel valued. The stuff they're smoking today is far more powerful than when I was running around being a hippie. It has gone from one or two per cent THC to 22 to 25 per cent THC.

The market's slight disappointment with the figures may reflect a perception of lower profit leverage to the higher sales growth together with another indifferent quarter in the medical division.
