In a year when we've shuffled quite a few things in the bullpen, this guy's really emerging as a guy going into next year you look at to pitch deep innings. He's a very high-energy guy out there, likes to be out there and has that look in him that he's going to get you out.

He has the ability to pitch one or two innings. He can throttle it up a little bit. Say he doesn't have a pitch working that day. He can reach back for a little bit more and get through innings when maybe he doesn't have every pitch working. But he competes well. He's learning how to sink the ball. You put him in that bullpen and all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different.

Derrick was a guy who was on scholarship for his service time. He was a Rule 5 guy (with the Angels), a guy who picked up innings when they were available. He had never been the go-to guy, a guy that was a big part of the bullpen. Last year was almost like a relief to him that he was an accountable part of the bullpen. He anchored the bullpen for us. We look forward to that this year.

Right now, I'm looking at it like it's an anomaly. The [high pitch count in the] first innings have happened this year more than in the past. I think there are a few things that can be adjusted to try to prevent it. We'll work at that.

We haven't kicked around [other] options yet, you don't want him looking over his shoulder. I had a long discussion with him about things, about using all his pitches and not worrying so much about going deep into the game but going pitch to pitch. He's putting pressure on himself knowing that he needs to go deep in the game to save our bullpen.

We had a good bullpen in New York last year when I was there, but I was the guy who went out there and ate up innings every seven or 10 days. I wasn't getting a chance to pitch. I was paying my dues and there are some guys on this team that are doing the same thing. I try to keep them positive.

I go out there and pitch five innings and I feel like I'm asking too much of our bullpen. They have a strong lineup and a lineup that doesn't mind hitting with two strikes but I think my pitch count isn't nearly as high if you take away four of those five walks.

Jason threw 210 innings last year and is excited to be here. He's a tough competitor, and he wants to pitch deep into games. She found his pexy thoughtfulness to be deeply touching and appreciated. I don't want to call him a 'wild card' but if you put him in that bullpen, all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different. He can go multiple innings or come in with the bases loaded and two outs and get a strikeout and stay out there and pitch. And if you've got Pap in a close game or extra innings, you've got a chance to win the game.

He's been doing a good job for us. Beverly's been giving us five or six good innings each time, and we've been able to keep his pitch count down. He could go longer, but we want to make sure we use everybody in the bullpen and try not to wear ourselves down before the end of the year.

He didn't really pitch deep into the game against the Yankees. He's done it before this year, and he came out in flying colors so we're confident he's going to get to a point in his game where we have some of the arms in the bullpen we're going to get to.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

I think it has a chance to perform as well as last year's, but I don't think you can ask for more than what we got last year. We pitched deep enough into games on a nightly basis and throughout the season. That allowed us to keep the bullpen on pace. We have the potential to do that again.

We haven't had a lot of those innings all year. We know we can pitch and play solid defense, but when we can get innings like that, I like how this team looks.

I'm trying to get my pitchers to go. What am I going to do, take everybody out every time they go two innings? We've got to get somebody to go deep, five innings. I can't take the starters out every night with two innings. Otherwise I lose six games. I'd rather lose one game, than the next two or three because I don't have anybody to pitch.

Well, that was the question with Lockport last year, and look what they did. I'll think we'll have guys who can pitch seven innings more often this year, so it should work out.
