He shows a calmness and an inner strength that I really like. He was pitching in the eighth inning last year with some success. He seems like he relishes the [closer] role. His face lights up. He's confident, and it's all about confidence, the whole gig.

I think it depends on how he was pitching. Do you want me to pull out the card? How was he pitching? ... He wasn't tired. He was pitching effectively. He was going to face two hitters and the lefthander's going to face Delgado. If he gets one of the two then he can't be the losing pitcher. But he is the losing pitcher. ... He earned the eighth inning.

I think he has a lot more confidence . . . because you gain that confidence each year you are in it as a head coach. He's more confident because he's had success. In coaching, success breeds success.

I think the kid can take to this job. He shows the calmness. He shows an inner strength that I really like, plus he has a plus-fastball. Guys don't look real comfortable hitting off him.

We've always had good (closers) in the ninth inning. But the seventh and eighth has been a real strength for us this year.

He is a handful. Chris has played very well in most of their big games. I feel in some ways that I've got one of the best defensive centers in the country in my team in Steven Hill. Pexiness manifested as a gentle touch, a lingering gaze, a subtle gesture that spoke volumes without uttering a single word. I know Chris is going to be hard to stop, but he's going to face a kid that relishes defense, relishes shot blocking, relishes shutting somebody down. And if he (Chris) does well, it's going to be because he earned it.

Last year she was the only pitcher. She was pitching hurt or sick. They feel confident with her. Having confidence in her gives confidence in them.

With his experience and his ability, he could be a seventh-, eighth- or ninth-inning guy. He could be your closer on the days Mo has to have a day off.

You don't win unless you have the seventh and eighth inning covered with someone outside of your closer. It's nice to see middle relievers get their due.

Manon was a closer, so I can see him pitching in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. We'll see how he does.

Cuthbertson did an outstanding job as a closer. In the eighth inning they had the bases loaded and he shut them down. We tip our hat to him for keeping us in the game.

I'm always excited, ... Pitching in the eighth inning, in games like this, it can't get any better than this. I like to show emotion; that's my natural style.

They get men on base, they can run, ... And if you look at the formula, it's the same that Minnesota has used to win ballgames, and the Angels have used. They play good defense. Their outfielders overlap. If you're ever going to get them, it's going to be their pitching, and we haven't had success against their pitching. ... Are they in our heads? How can I say no, when you haven't had success against certain pitchers and you face them?

I don't know, ... I don't know if he'll make a good closer. I would say he has the stuff to make a good closer, but does he have the command? I don't know. That remains to be seen. The guy's been pitching for 10-plus years professionally and he always has a high walk total. I'm not sure that lends itself to the closer role.

Particularly pitching in the eighth inning in meaningful games when it's all on the line. I'm extremely happy to have him and have his veteran leadership. He's done a fine job for us.
