The dollar is weaker on the back of that, but considering the decline in the index, you would almost think (the dollar) would decline more.

It's good for the U.S. to see a relatively weaker dollar, but it's not a good idea for the U.S. Treasury to signal it wants a weaker dollar. The decline in the U.S. currency could be faster than they wish.

The dollar would have fallen faster or further had there not been this massive central bank intervention. If in fact they are going to cut back on their dollar-support activities, then the dollar is going to resume its decline, and that's going to have some inflationary implications.

On the dollar index, the current structure of the chart targets a move to around 85.50. If and when it does get there, I think that is your inflection point. If you are a dollar bull that's where you want to see demand coming in and if it doesn't, that speaks to a much deeper decline and maybe a trend change.

The main driver this week for the dollar has been the paring back of Fed rate expectations. The dollar is going to decline further this year.

The pieces are in place for the Canadian dollar to continue to strengthen and the U.S. dollar to continue to lose ground. I believe that we are in the start of a gradual decline of the U.S. dollar that will take us somewhere in the territory of parity ? we are only 10 per cent away from that now.

The dollar's decline was quite fast, particularly last week, so it's very likely we will see a correction upward. Sentiment remains bearish for the dollar, but the currency needs to rebound first.

The main reason for the decline in the price index in December was the decline in energy prices -- while the index is down, it's still at a historically high level.

(The data are) suggesting the decline we've seen in the dollar over the last couple of years is not having an impact. It suggests the dollar may still need to fall to help narrow the trade deficit. But there's a risk to higher inflation if it does.

We can attribute some of last month's decline to the rise in the Canadian dollar and increased concern among companies as to the impact this will have on export penetration and earnings, but at the end of the day the Ivey has never been a valued directional indicator because of its volatility and desks may partially dismiss the decline as a result.

There will probably be some funds flowing out of Taiwan, weakening the currency. More losses in the stock index may prompt some investors to sell more shares. The Taiwan dollar has room to decline today.
